LADY CHARGERS SOFTBALL TAKE TWO FROM GEORGIAN COURT UNIVERSITY
Lakewood, N.J. (3/24/13) The Dominican College softball team won two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games against host, Georgian Court University, this afternoon in games played at the GCU Softball Field.
Lakewood, N.J. (3/24/13) The Dominican College softball team won two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games against host, Georgian Court University, this afternoon in games played at the GCU Softball Field.
Game One: The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Lady Chargers struck for two runs on an infield single by catcher Ashley Corrao* (Staten Island, N.Y.) and a sacrifice from Paige Berzak (Cypress, Calif.).
GCU scored runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the ame at 2-all. DC exploded with four runs in the sixth inning to regain a 6-2 lead. Shortstop Alyssa Schwed (Kinnelon, N.J.) hit a one out RBI double to left center field and centerfielder Julie Plante* (Swansea, Mass.) followed with an RBI infield single. An error on the play allowed a second run to score and pitcher Delaney Childers (Johnstown, Ohio) had an RBI single up-the-middle to make the score 6-2.
The Lady Chargers added a run in the seventh inning as Corrao scored on a Lion error for the 7-2 win.
Dominican recorded 13 hits in game one as four different players had two hits each.
Childers improved to 4-5 on the season in the complete game win, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and five strikeouts.
Game Two: DC scored three runs in the second inning as Schwed hit an RBI single through the right side and Plante followed with a double to left field which scored two runs for the 3-0 lead.
GCU scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Lady Chargers added a run in the fifth as Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch and one in the sixth on the RBI single off the bat of Childers. In the seventh, Corrao hit a solo blast over the left center field fence to score the sixth Lady Charger run of the game. The Lions added a run in the bottom of the seventh for the final 6-3 score.
Kathryn Coles* (Farmville, Va.) went 3-4 in the game, while Plante, Childers and Kimberly Ragazzo (Lawrenceville, N.J.) all collected two hits a-piece.
Ragazzo got the complete game win (2-3) , allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits.
With the win Dominican improves to 7-9 overall and 4-0 in the CACC, while GCU falls to 8-14 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
