LADY CHARGERS SOFTBALL SPLIT WITH ECKERD COLLEGE
St. Petersburg, FL (2/29/12) The Dominican College softball team improved to 1-3 overall after splitting a non-conference double-header this evening against Eckerd College. DC won game one, 9-0, in five innings, while the hosts topped the Lady Chargers, 6-5 in eight innings in the finale in games played at Turley Complex.

Game One: The Lady Charger offense exploded for their nine runs in the first two innings of play. Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH) received a one out walk and later moved to third on a single to right field by senior Deidre Jeppson* (Sylmar, CA). Paige Berzak (Cypress, CA) singled up-the-middle to score Childers and catcher Ashley Corrao (Staten Island, NY) delivered a three run homer to centerfield for a 4-0 lead.
In the second inning DC scored five runs on two hits and two errors to claim a 9-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Corrao reached on a fielding error which brought home Jeppson and Childers. A bunt single by Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun, VA) ended up scoring two runs (one RBI on the play) and Kathryn Coles (Farmville, VA) had an sacrifice RBI bunt to plate Wassmann.
Jeppson went 3-4 with two runs scored, while Corrao recorded four RBIs.
Childers got the shut out win (1-1) in five innings of work, scattering just two hits and eight strikeouts.
Game Two: Dominican took an early 1-0 lead in the first on the RBI groundout by Jeppson. EC came back with a run in the bottom stanza to tie the score, but DC answered back with two runs in the top of the second on the RBI single up-the-middle by second basemen Brielle Kerscher (Staten Island, NY) and shortstop Julie Plante* (Swansea, MA) reached on a fielder's choice which brought in Ashley Martinez* (Bloomfield, NJ) who had reached base earlier on a fielder's choice.
Eckerd tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the third. In the sixth, Corrao hit her second home run of the night, this one over the left center field fence to plate two runs to give Dominican a 5-3 advantage. DC answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to re-tie the game at 5-5.
An infield single in the bottom of the eighth gave EC the 6-5 victory and double-header split.
Childers suffered the loss in 4 1/3 innings of work, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits. Starter Katrina Pistilli* (Staten Island, NY) went three innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
Dominican is back in action on Friday when they take on Assumption College and Wilmington University in non-conference games at the National Training Center.
