SOFTBALL SWEEPS WILMINGTON UNIVERSITY

Orangeburg, NY (5/2/10) The Dominican College softball team swept an important Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header from the visiting Wildcats of Wilmington University, 2-0 and 10-4, this afternoon on Senior Day at the DC softball field. With the sweep DC has earned the top seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament.

Orangeburg, NY (5/2/10)  The Dominican College softball team swept an important Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header from the visiting Wildcats of Wilmington University, 2-0 and 10-4, this afternoon on Senior Day at the DC softball field.  With the sweep DC has earned the top seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament.

In game one, the Lady Chargers got on the board in the first inning as freshman Ashley Corrao (Staten Island, NY) delivered a two-out RBI single up the middle to score senior Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) who had earlier hit a single to left field.

DC's second run came in the fourth inning as freshman Julie Plante (Swansea, MA) hit a double to left center to plate senior Jessica Martinieri (Tampa, FL) to extend the lead to the final 2-0 score.

Sophomore right handed pitcher Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) improved to 13-6 in the shut out victory, allowing six hits and recording four strikeouts in seven innings.

Down 4-0 after three innings in the night cap, DC rallied with back-to-back four-run innings in the fourth and fifth to take an 8-4 lead.  In the fourth Corrao collected her second RBI single of the day and centerfielder Deidre Jeppson (Sylmar, CA) later followed with a double that allowed two runs to score.  As the throw came into second base, a third run scored on the play to tie the contest at 4-4.

In the fifth, Corrao stayed hot at the plate as she blasted a grand slam over the centerfield fence with one out to put Dominican ahead 8-4.  In the sixth, Corrao collected her sixth and seventh RBIs of the game with a single up the middle to extend the lead to what would be the eventual final score of 10-4.

Freshman Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH) picked up her 20th win of the season (20-7), allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and five strikeouts.

Corrao led the Lady Charger offense as she went 4-7 on the day with three runs scored and eight RBIs.

Between games, the Lady Chargers honored seniors Lauren Galladay (Aberdeen, NJ), Danielle Garrison, Martinieri, Piasecki, Philpot and Kelli Rehm (Livingston, NJ).

With the sweep Dominican finishes the regular season with an overall record of 33-13 and a 23-3 CACC record.

Domican earned the top seed with the sweep in the upcoming CACC Tournament and will take on #8 the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Thursday, May 6th at 10am on Field 1 at Georgian Court University.
