Waterbury, Conn. (11/6/14) The #2 Dominican College men's soccer team fell to #6 Wilmington University Wildcats, in a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime loss in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Semi-Final game played at Lamoy Field on the campus of Post University.
With the loss, Dominican ends the season with an overall record of 13-4-1.
After a scoreless first half senior midfielder Luis DelPezo (Portchester, N.Y.) blasted a ball into the lower right corner of the net and passed the Wilmington keeper to take a 1-0 lead at the 59:08 mark.
A free kick in the 77th minute of play over a wall of Charger defenders brought the Wildcats back into the contest and tied the score at 1-1.
Neither team got off a shot in the first overtime session, but in the second overtime period, a foul and red card to a DC defender set up the game-winning penalty kick for Wilmington. The ball went into the top right corner of the net for the 2-1 victory.
Keeper Steven Hegner (Pomona, N.Y.) made four saves in the loss.
