CHARGERS LACROSSE FALL IN SEASON OPENER
Hillburn, NY (3/6/12) The Dominican College men's lacrosse team opened up the 2012 season with a non-conference loss to Merrimack College, 17-7, this afternoon in a game played at the Torne Valley Sports Complex. With the loss, Dominican falls to 0-1 overall, while Merrimack improves to 1-0 on the season.

With the loss, Dominican falls to 0-1 overall, while Merrimack improves to 1-0 on the season.
The first quarter saw the Warriors net the opening goal, but the Chargers answered back on a man-up opportunity as senior attacker Korin Pierce (Middleburg, VA) recorded his first goal of the season off the pass from sophomore Chris Delaney (Port Coquitlam, BC) to tie the game at 1-1. Less than a minute later, MC went back on top 2-1 and Dominican came back on another man-up opportunity on a goal by Delaney after a pass from Dylan Stedman (North Potomac, MD) with 3:30 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 2-2. Merrimack would net their third goal of the game with just under two minutes left for the 3-2 lead.
MC opened up second quarter scoring with a goal for a 4-2 lead, but sophomore midfielder Thomas Dertinger (Nanuet, NY) brought DC within a goal (4-3) off the pass from Connor Lawlor* (Neptune City, NJ) with 12:52 on the clock before halftime. From there the Merrimack offense exploded with six goals to end the half with a 10-3 lead and opened the third quarter with two more to complete an 8-0 run and take a 12-3 lead with 12:35 to play in the third quarter.
Delaney broke the Warrior run on a man-up opportunity to record his second goal of the contest off the assist from Pierce. Four more goals by Merrimack closed out third quarter play and saw the Warriors on top, 16-4.
One and half minutes into the final quarter MC tacked on their final goal of the game to lead 17-4. Dertinger began a 3-0 Charger run with his second goal of the game off another assist by Pierce on a man-up opportunity and Pierce followed less than a minute later with an unassisted goal. Junior Daniel Steigert (Copaigue, NY) ended the scoring in the game with his first goal of the season off the dish from Lawlor for the final 17-7 score.
Delaney, Pierce and Dertinger all had two goals a-piece in the loss, while Lawlor and Pierce added two assists each.
Goalie Andrew Slater (Brookfield, CT) made a career high 19 saves in the loss.
Dominican is back in action next Friday when they open up East Coast Conference (ECC) play with a home game against Chestnut Hill College. Game time is set for 4pm at the Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn, NY.
