CHARGERS OPEN SEASON WITH WIN OVER #24 FALCONS
Caldwell, N.J. (11/14/25) The Dominican University New York men's basketball team opened up the 25-26 season with a 93-89 overtime victory over the #24 Falcons of Bentley University this afternoon in the first game of the CACC/NE10 Challenge, hosted by Caldwell University.
The win puts the Chargers at 1-0 on the season, while the Falcons now stand at 0-1 overall.
Bentley had a seven-point lead (20-13) with nine and a half minutes left in the first half when Dominican went on an 11-3 run to go ahead 24-23 with 4:50 on the clock. DUNY closed out the half by outscoring Bentley, 11-7, to claim a 35-30 lead at the break. Senior Isaiah Honis came off the bench to score nine points in the first frame, while the Chargers went 7-7 from the charity stripe and shot 40% (13-32) from the floor.
The Chargers would extend their lead to as many as 10 points (80-70) on a Koi D. Kirk, Jr. layup, but Bentley went on an 11-1 to tie the score at 81-81 with under a minute to play. A BU jumper put them ahead, 83-81 with five ticks left, but Chance Morrish sent the game to overtime as he drove the lane and scored a layup to make the score 83-83.
Dominican opened the overtime period with back-to-back baskets to claim an 87-83 lead, but the Falcons fought back with four straight points to re-tie the score, 87-87. Morrish hit a layup and Juelz Dickerson later iced two free throws to rebuild the slim 91-87 advantage. BU would cut the lead to one possession with 1:26 to go, but junior Key'Sean Maynard hit two clutch free throws with 11 seconds left to secure the 93-89 win.
Morrish finished the game with 21 points, shooting 8-12 from the floor and 5-7 from the foul line.
Guard Elijah Peters tallied 16 points and three steals, while Honis finished with 16 points and six rebounds.
Kirk and Maynard scored 13 points each, while Kirk added a team best four steals and four rebounds.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow at the CACC/NE10 Challenge when they take on Southern New Hampshire University.
