Waterbury, Conn. (11/16/16) The Dominican College men's basketball team improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play after hanging on for a 64-62 victory over host, Post University, this evening a CACC North Division game played in the Drubner Center.
The game was tied 7-all with 14:46 left in the first half when sophomore Sayon Charles (Staten Island, N.Y.) began a 15-8 DC run with back-to-back layups. Guard E.J. Smith (Nyack, N.Y.) followed with consecutive treys to increase the lead to 17-13 and Travis Cook (Middletown, N.Y.) added two free throws with 10:22 to go. Smith completed the run with his third three point basket of the half to make the score 22-15.
Post would cut the lead to four (24-20), but the Chargers countered once again with junior Gerrel Irvin (Bay Shore, N.Y.) laying the ball in the hoop and rookie Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, N.Y.) nailed a three pointer to put DC up, 29-20, with five and half to go. The Eagles rallied and closed out the first half six straight points to pull ahead, 36-35, at the intermission.
DC opened the second stanza with a 12-6 run to take the lead, 47-42, and would maintain the lead for the remainder of the game. With under two minutes to play and the team holding a 62-61 lead, Irvin iced two free throws to give them the 64-61 advantage. A Charger foul put the Eagles at the line for three free throws with one second to play, but the player only hit one of them and Dominican held on for the win.
Irvin came off the bench to record his third consecutive double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Smith finished with nine points in reserve, while Daniel Grant (Middletown, N.Y.) scored seven points and three assists.
Senior Kristopher Hargraves (Teaneck, N.J.) had a team high five assists and netted six points with Najee Taylor (Newark, N.J.) also had six points in the win.
The Chargers will host the 5th Annual Daniel Sullivan Tournament this coming Friday and Saturday night in the Hennessy Center.
