Orangeburg, NY (12/2/09) The Chargers basketball squad charged past the visiting Cougars of Caldwell College, 61-51 this evening in their home opening game of the 2009-2010 season in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action from Coach Baxter Court.

Caldwell jumped out to an early 9-5 lead, but a Dominican 13-3 run gave them a six point advantage with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half. A power outage with 4:10 left caused a 15 minute delay but when play resumed increased their lead to eight points and went into the break with a 29-25 lead.
In the second half, the Chargers increased their lead to 11 (41-30) with just over 16 minutes left. A Cougar 7-0 spurt cut the lead to four, but DC answered back with 6-0 run to take a 49-37 lead and never looked back for the 61-51 victory.
Freshman point guard Leon Porter (Laurel, MD) led four Chargers in scoring with a game leading 14 points and five assists. Senior forward Zach Huston (Johnson City, NY) netted 12 points and two blocks. Junior Jamell Cromartie (White Plains, NY) netted 10 points off the bench and freshman center Cory Quimby (Middletown, NY) had the game's only double-double with 10 points and 11 caroms.
Senior Matt Cohen (Forked River, NY) and junior Antonio Brimley (Paterson, NJ) paced the Cougars with 10 points each in the loss.
With the victory Dominican improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the CACC, while Caldwell falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the CACC.
Dominican is back in action on Friday in the DC Tip-Off Tournament when they take on New York Institute of Technology at 6pm.
