Valhalla, N.Y. (5/2/25) The #1 seed in the north division Dominican University New York Chargers swept the CACC opening round over #4 seed in the north division Caldwell University Cougars on Viking Field on the campus of Westchester Community College in Valhalla, N.Y.
The Chargers, #7 in the NCAA Division II East Region Poll, punched their ticket to the double elimination bracket next week with a 20-3 victory in game one and a 13-2 win in game two.
The Chargers improve their overall record to 37-15 and extend their current winning streak to seven games.
Game One: The Chargers downed the Cougars in game one by a score of 20-3 for the 1-0 advantage.
DU starting pitcher Luis Rivera had a seven inning, two hit performance while striking out eight Cougars on the way to his eighth win on the season.
The Chargers clobbered 22 total hits in the win. Kevin Hirsch led the Chargers in hits going 4-6 including two doubles and drove in two runs.
Jaden Maia added three hits including a double and a triple while driving in a team-high five RBI's. Byron Arias and Ryan Bongiorno also finished with three hits each. Arias ripped two doubles, drove in two RBI's, while scoring three runs. Bongiorno also added a double and drove in three-RBIs.
David Knepper went 2-4 including a triple and added two RBI's. Ian Labrador drove in two runs while Ty Gilligan added one RBI. Erick Diaz finished 2-5 with two RBI's and three runs scored.
Game Two: The Chargers completed the best of three sweep with a 13-2 victory in game two and advanced to the double elimination bracket next week.
Five quick runs by the Chargers in the first two innings gave DU the lead including a two-run homer by Diaz. Diaz also added a triple and three-RBIs.
Dominican added two runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning while plating one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings.
Maia and Knepper each recorded three hits. Maia added two doubles and three RBI's while Knepper finished with a double and two RBI's. Labrador and Juan Peralta each recorded two hits.
Starting pitcher Anthony Leak struckout six Cougars over seven innings while earning his eighth win of the season.
Next up will be the double elimination bracket hosted by Wilmington University starting next Thursday. Opponent and time TBA.
