Pomona, N.Y. (4/15/25) In a battle of two first place teams, the Dominican University New York baseball team earned a split with the Goldey-Beacom Lightning this afternoon at Clover Stadium.
The regionally ranked and first in the CACC north division Chargers, fell in game one by a score of 15-2 and then bounced back to edge the Lightning 2-1 in game two.
Dominican now stands at 27-14 overall and 21-7 in conference play while regionally and nationally ranked and first in the south division GBC, now holds a record of 28-10 overall and 18-4 in the CACC.
Game One: The Lightning jumped in front early with four runs after a two-run shot down the right field line got the scoring started by Anthony Charles.
GBC plated two more runs after a wild pitch and a throwing error which extended the first inning lead to 4-0.
The Lightning would extend their lead with two runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings followed by three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.
The Chargers got on the board after an RBI-single by Jean Nunez in the fifth inning and then later Ian Labrador drove in an RBI on a ground out.
Kevin Hirsch went 2-3 with a double and a triple. Isaiah Figueroa suffered the loss as he falls to 4-2.
George Starr threw a complete seven innings allowing two runs and struck out five as he earned his fourth win on the season.
Game Two: The Chargers bounced back in game two to edge the Lightning by a score of 2-1 to earn the split.
DU starting pitcher Anthony Leak took the mound in game two and threw a complete seven innings while allowing one run and struck out nine batters to improve to 6-2 on the year.
GBC starting pitcher Kory Williams tossed 5.1 allowing two runs and struck out eight but suffered the loss.
Dominican scored the first run of the game after an RBI-single by Erick Diaz in the third inning.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning when the Lightning tied the game after a Jaden Dickerson sac fly.
The Chargers answered and regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-double by Alexander Reyes.
The Lightning loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but Leak earned one more strikeout to secure the victory.
The Chargers are back in action Thursday afternoon when they visit CACC north division rival Caldwell University.
