Dominican scored the opening run of the game in the top of the second on the RBI double to left field from Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week, Mark Vargas (Bronx, N.Y.).
UNH responded with runs in the bottom of the second and the third innings to go up 3-1, but DC countered with a four-run fourth frame to re-claim a 5-3 lead. In the fourth, Vargas and catcher Edward O'Neill (Madison, Conn.) both drew bases loaded walks, while second basemen Donald Crispyn (Freeport, N.Y.) had an RBI single to center field. An infield fielder's choice off the bat of Rafael Balado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) brought home the fourth DC run of the inning.
DC added two more runs in the fifth on a throwing error and another single to center field from Crispyn, while in the bottom stanza New Haven scored two runs of their own to make the score 7-5. A Dominican run in the sixth on the RBI single to right field from short stop Robert Alonso (Hurley, N.Y.) to give DC an 8-5 advantage.
New Haven scored runs in their next three innings, including a five-run seventh stanza to regain a 14-8 lead. Dominican scored four runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run single to right center from Vargas and two runs scored on an error for the final 14-12 score.
Crispyn finished with three hits and two RBIs.
Vargas tallied four RBIs on two hits and scored three runs.
Reliever Thomas Musso (Staten Island, N.Y.) suffered the loss (1-3) in 1/3 inning of relief, allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits.
With the loss, Dominican falls to 19-21 on the season.
