LADY CHARGERS SOFTBALL TAKE TWO FROM GEORGIAN COURT UNIVERSITY
Orangeburg, NY (3/18/12) The Dominican College softball team opened up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a double-header victory over the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University this afternoon in games played at the DC Softball Field. Dominican won game one, 3-1 and took the nightcap, 7-1 to improve to 8-8 overall and 2-0 in the CACC.
Orangeburg, NY (3/18/12) The Dominican College softball team opened up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a double-header victory over the visiting Lions of Georgian Court University this afternoon in games played at the DC Softball Field. Dominican won game one, 3-1 and took the nightcap, 7-1 to improve to 8-8 overall and 2-0 in the CACC.
Game One: GCU took a 1-0 lead in the first and held that lead until the bottom of the fifth inning when Dominican struck for three runs. Julie Plante* (Swansea, MA) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error. Junior Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH) doubled home Plante and later center fielder Ashley Martinez* (Bloomfield, NJ) delivered a huge two-run single to center field to give the Lady Chargers a 3-1 lead and eventual victory.
Childers picked up the complete game win (6-4), allowing one run on five hits and seven strikeouts.
Game Two: Left fielder Victoria LaPorte (Washingtonville, NY) hit an RBI single to right field to put Dominican ahead 1-0 in the second. The Lions tied the game in the top of the third inning, but the Lady Chargers answered back with a run in the bottom stanza on a sacrifice by Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun, VA) to take a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, Childers led off the inning with a solo home run over the right center field fence and catcher Ashley Corrao (Staten Island, NY) hit an RBI single to left field to increase the Lady Charger lead to 4-1.
Dominican added three runs in the sixth as Corrao singled to tally her second and third RBIs of the game and third basemen Kathryn Coles (Farmville, VA) hit a single to left field to score the seventh Dominican run of the game.
Pitcher Katrina Pistilli* (Staten Island, NY) improved to 2-4 overall in the complete game victory, allowing one run (none earned) on four hits and seven strikeouts.
The Lady Chargers are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Felician College in a CACC double-header.
