2009 Dominican College Women's Soccer Season Summary

 

The Dominican College Women's Soccer Team finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 9-6-4 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 7-2-3.  The Lady Chargers finished in sixth place in the CACC, thus marking their seventeenth consecutive appearance in the CACC Tournament.

 

Having earned the sixth seed in the CACC Tournament, the team traveled to the third-seeded Griffins of Chestnut Hill College.  DC took a 1-0 into the intermission and came away with the 2-1 upset to advance to the CACC Semi-Finals.  In the semi-finals against second-seeded Georgian Court University, the Lady Chargers suffered a 4-0 loss to end their season.

 

Junior captain Margaret Porter led both the team and finished second in the CACC in goals scored (17).  She led the team and CACC in shots (109) and finished second in shots per game (5.20) and points (36).  She was named to the All-CACC First Team, the 2009 Daktronics, Inc East Region First Team, the Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Star First Team and to the 2009 Daktronics, Inc NCAA Division II Women's Soccer All-America Second Team.  Porter was also named the CACC Player of the Week once this season and was named to the CACC All-Tournament Team.

 

Freshman Nicolle Sanchez finished second on the team with four goals and three assists on the season.  She played in all 19 games this season and for her efforts received All-CACC Honorable Mention Honors.

 

Senior Rosa Centurion, junior Heather Augliera and sophomore Julia Camp all finished the season tied for the team lead with four assists a- piece on the season.

 

Senior Tina Sturchio started 19 games in the net for the Lady Chargers this season.  She finished the year with a goals against average of 1.50, which put her in second place in the CACC.  She recorded a 113 saves to finish with a save percentage of .790 which put her in sixth place in the conference.  She also finished fourth in the conference in saves.

 

Teammate Jamilyn Snyder was also named to the CACC All-Tournament Team.

 

With the loss of four seniors to graduation, Sturchio, Centurion, Michelle Cusano and Sara Cordaro second year head coach, Lona Ozrek will look to the leadership of Porter along with a strong nucleus of returners to guide the team to a successful 2009 campaign.
