Hillburn, N.Y. (4/24/14) The Dominican College women's lacrosse season ended the regular season today with a non-conference victory over the visiting Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 10-7, in a game played this afternoon at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Junior midfielder Gina Sparaco (Freeport, N.Y.) recorded the hat thrick with three goals in the victory.
Traci-Joan Muniz* (Middlesex, N.J.) and Allison Smitwick (Commack, N.Y) each scored two goals, while Emily Murray (Oakdale, N.Y.), Kelly Barbarite (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Haliann Fitzgerald (Walden, N.Y.) all recorded a goal.
Murray, Barbarite and Christina Brennan (Washington Township, N.J.) all had one assist in the win.
Goalie Britanny Kiernan (Clarkstown, N.Y.) made 14 saves in the win.
The game was scoreless through almost the first ten minutes of play when DC began their 5-0 run to hold a 5-0 lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half. Back-to-back goals from SCSU made the score 5-2, but Smithwick made the score 6-2 with 2:43 to go. The Owls ended the first half scoring with a goal to cut the deficit to 6-3.
DC started the second half with a 2-1 run through the first ten minutes, before a SCSCU 2-0 spurt make the score 8-6 with 8:41 to play. The Lady Chargers put together their own 2-0 run to increase the lead to 10-6 and an Owl goal with 1:45 on the clock made the final 10-7 DC victory.
Dominican ends the regular season with an overall record of 10-6, which sets a new program record for wins in a season.
The Lady Chargers will take on Philadelphia University on Saturday in the semi-finals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament.
