Hillburn, N.Y. (3/20/14) The Dominican College women's lacrosse team fell to 0-3 on the season after losing to the visiting Purple Knights from Saint Michael's College, 12-9, this afternoon in a non-conference game played at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Saint Michael's netted four goals in the first seven minutes of the game to take the early 4-0 lead when senior midfielder Traci-Joan Muniz* (Middlesex, N.J.) netted her first of three game goals with 22:59 remaining in the first half. A 3-0 Purple Knight run extened their lead to 7-1 before Haliann Fitzgerald (Walden, N.Y.) scored her third goal of the season of the pass from Christina Brennan (Washington Township, N.J.) and Emily Murray (Oakdale, N.Y.) followed with a free position goal to make the score 7-3 with under ten minutes left in the first half.
SMC tacked on two more goals for the 9-3 lead at the break.
Brennan began the second half scoring on a free position goal, but the Purple Knights countered with a goal to regain the six goal lead (10-4). Muniz notched her fifth goal of the season on a free position shot with under twenty minutes to play and later followed with her third game goal with 7:17 to go to cut the deficit to 11-6. Down 12-6, the Lady Chargers netted three goals in the remaining minute as Murray, Allison Smithwick (Commack, N.Y.) and Kelly Barbarite (Smithtown, N.Y.) all recorded goals, with Muniz recording two assist for the final 12-9 score.
Muniz led Dominican with three goals and two assists on the day, while Murray finished with two goals.
Goalie Brittany Kiernan (Clarkstown, N.Y.) made 14 saves in the loss.
Dominican returns to action on Saturday as they travel to conference opponent, Georgian Court Unviersity.
