WOMEN'S LACROSSE EDGED BY MOLLOY COLLEGE

Rockville Centre, N.Y. (3/8/14)  The Dominican College women's lacrosse team lost a non-conference game to host, Molloy College, 12-11 this afternoon in a game played at the Dean Skelos Complex.

The Lions opened the game with the first goal just 51 seconds into the first half, but the Lady Chargers charged back with three straight goals to go ahead 3-1 with 25:49 on the clock.  Allison Smithwick (Commack, N.Y.) and Christina Brennan (Washington Township, N.J.) each scored on a free position shot, while Gina Sparaco (Freeport, N.Y.) netted an unassisted goal.

A 2-0 Lion run tied the game at 3-3, but freshman attacker Haliann Fitzgerald (Walden, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal off pass from Kelly Barbarite (Smithtown, N.Y.) to regain a 4-3 advantage with 20:46 to go.  Dominican went on to outscore Molloy 4-3 to end the first half with a 8-6 lead.

Brennan opened the second half with her second game goal to extend the lead to 9-6, but four unanswered Molloy goals put them back ahead 10-9.  Sparaco scored her second game goal to tie the score 10-10 with just over 15 minutes on the clock and Emily Murray (Oakdale, N.Y.) retied the game 11-11 on a man-up goal with 8:15 to play.  The Lions netted the game-winner on a free position shot for the 12-11 victory.

Sparaco led the offense with three goals, while Smithwick, Brennan, and senior Traci-Joan Muniz* (Middlesex, N.J.) all scored two goals each in the loss.

Brittany Kiernan (Clarkstown, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the loss.

With the loss, Dominican is now 0-1 on the season.

The team is back in action on March 17th as they host Philadelphi University.
