Orangeburg, NY (4/5/12) The Dominican College women's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking triple overtime sudden death loss to the visiting Tigers of Holy Family University, 16-15, this afternoon in a game played at the DC Lacrosse Field. With the loss, Dominican falls to 3-7 overall and 3-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play.
The first half saw both teams go on 2-0 spurts and trade goals back-and-forth for a 5-5 score at the intermission.
Dominican led 11-9 with 10:54 to go in the second half, when the Tigers scored three straight goals to go ahead 13-11 with just over two and a half minutes left in regulation. Sophomore KC Jentzen (Pearl River, NY) netted an unassisted goal with 44 seconds left and freshman attacker Allison Smithwick (Commack, NY) scored the game-tying goal off the pass from senior Aubree Williams* (Great Meadows, NJ) with 16 ticks left to tie the score at 13-13.
In the first overtime, Dominican scored both goals as Traci-Joan Muniz (Middlsex, NJ) tallied an unassisted goal and freshman Gina Sparaco (Freeport, NY) scored off an assist from Williams to give DC the 15-13 lead.
The second three minute overtime period saw Holy Family University do all the scoring with two goals to re-tie the contest at 15-15 and force the third overtime sudden death period. A free position Tiger goal with 20 seconds left on the clock gave Holy Family University the 16-15 win. All three Tiger goals in overtime period were scored on free position shots.
Williams and Jentzen each scored four goals a-piece, while Williams added a game leading four assists for a total of eight points in the loss.
Muniz finished with three goals and Sparaco netted two goals.
Goalie Veronica Iozzi (Chester, NJ) made 16 saves in 68:40 of action.
Dominican returns to Saturday, April 14th when they host Chestnut Hill College.
