2008-2009 Dominican College Women's Basketball Season Summary
The Lady Chargers basketball team finished the 08-09 season with a 17-12 overall record and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 13-4.
The Lady Chargers won their second consecutive CACC North Regular Season Title and were given the top northern seed in the CACC Tournament. In the quarter-finals, DC squared off against #4 Warriors of Nyack College and game away with the 71-61 victory. In the semi-finals, Dominican faced the #2 of the south division, Wildcats of Wilmington University, and ended their season with a 64-55 loss.
Leading the way this season for the Lady Chargers was senior captain Althea Chambers, averaging 18.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg. She started all 28 games this season, averaging 31.9 minutes per game. She was named to All-CACC First Team, the Daktronics NCAA Division II East All-Region Second Team, the All-Met First Team and the CACC All-Academic Team for third time in her career. She scored her 1,000th career point in a 76-57 victory over Bloomfield College and finishes her career with 1,141 points to place her 14th in the Sue Heller 1,000 Point Club. She ranked 3rd in the CACC in scoring, 16th in rebounding, 14th in field goal percentage (43.5%), 9th in free throw percentage (80.8%), 8th in steals (51) and 9th in offensive rebounds (85).
Junior forward and fellow captain Adele Laskowski finished second on the team with 14.4 ppg and third with 5.0 rpg after starting all 29 games. She was ranked 9th in the CACC in scoring and 7th in steals (55) and 9th in three point field goals made (46). She recorded her 1,000th career point in a 71-55 victory over Goldey-Beacom College and now has over 1,200 career points. For her efforts, she was named to the All-CACC Second Team and the All-Met Second Team.
Junior guard Rachelle Sainten finished with 7.0 ppg , while senior Shalissa Burgess averaged 6.8 ppg and 6.4 rpg.
The Lady Chargers graduate three players (Chambers, Burgess and Kayla MacDonald), two starters, this season. Head Coach John Burke will rely on a solid core of seniors and juniors next year, along with a now experienced sophomore class in their quest to win their third consecutive CACC North Title and a CACC Tournament Championship.
