2007-08 Dominican College Women's Basketball Preview
The defending Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Champions Dominican College women's basketball team finished the 06-07 season with an overall record of 21-9 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 15-7. The Lady Chargers finished the regular season in fourth place in the CACC and were seeded fourth in the conference tournament. In the quarter-finals of the tournament, the team hosted the fifth seeded Goldey-Beacon College Lightning and suffered a disappointing, 49-71 loss.
The team then received the second seed in the ECAC Tournament where they defeated #3 Adelphi University, 67-54 in the semi-finals and cruised to a 69-53 victory over top seeded and host Philadelphia University Junior Dana Rotio was named the ECAC Tournament MVP with a 17 point performance in the Championship game.
The Lady Chargers return 11 players and three starters from last year's squad. Captains Rotio, Althea Chambers and Kristen Tracey will look to guide the team in the 2007-2008 campaign.
Head Coach, John Burke, enters his seventh year at the helm of the Lady Chargers with what he believes will be a very balanced team with talent and depth in both the front and back court. The addition of an outstanding recruiting class, who will have an immediate impact on the team, has Coach Burke in high spirits for the upcoming season.
The back court will feature a trio of veteran players. Starting at the point will be Rotio who led the team in steals (93) and finished second on the team in points per game (12.0), assists (97) and minutes (29.0) last year. Rotio runs the floor well and plays stellar defense as she led the CACC in steals last season. Backing up Rotio at the point will be freshman Shanice Scully. A graduate of the Manhattan Center for Math and Science, Scully is an outstanding defender on the ball and will provide the Lady Chargers with instant quickness off the bench.
Senior Tracey will start at the shooting guard position with her outstanding three point shooting capabilities. A leader both on and off the court, she will be counted on to provide quality minutes both offensively and defensively.
The third guard position will be manned by Chambers. An outstanding offensive rebounder, she plays with a lot of intensity and is tough on the defensive end.
Freshmen Rachelle Sainten and Frankie Melione will both come off the bench for the lady Chargers at the guard position. Sainten is an outstanding athlete who possesses great speed and defensive skills at the two spot. Melione makes an immediate impact off the bench with her defensive skills and intelligence on the floor. Rounding out the back court is freshman Kristen Haycook who will see time at both the one and two spots. Haycook has a great jump shot and makes good decisions on the floor to give DC a lot of depth at the guard positions.
Up front will feature the return of sophomore Adele Laskowski, an All-CACC Honorable Mention pick last year, who led the team in points per game (15.1). She was named CACC Rookie of the Week five times in 06-07 and was ninth in the CACC in scoring. Laskowski runs the floor well and can score from both the inside and outside. Junior Nikki Genzanto will see time at the four spot with her impressive jump shot and off ball defense. Freshman Jasmine Schinella will round out the four spot with her great athleticism and strong presence underneath.
Junior Shalissa Burgess will start in the center. Burgess is a very athletic player with strong post moves. She is explosive under the basket with her rebounding abilities and defense. Backing her up will be fellow junior Kayla MacDonald. MacDonald has shown much improvement since her rookie year with the talent to score and toughness under the hoop.
Returning players Magaret Henn and Lindsay Garrahan will see time in the back court, along with freshman Jessica Fairweather. Henn and Garrahan both possess a nice jump shot and should provide quality minutes off the bench. Fairweather provides instant offense off the bench for the Lady Chargers and is making the transition to the post after playing a guard in high school
The Lady Chargers season will open up the season at the Nyack College by hosting the Dominican College Tip-Off Tournament on November 16 and 17. DC will square off against nationally ranked Bentley College and the University of Bridgeport in the tournament. Senior Night will be February 27, 2008 against Post University.
The Seventh Annual Sue Heller Game, played in honor of the former player who tragically passed away, is scheduled for January 26, 2007 against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
The 2007-08 Dominican College women's basketball program will be a much more aggressive and quick squad than in the past. They are more athletic and will play more of a fast break tempo this year. The coaching staff is very optimistic about this squad with their improved defense and front court options to win a conference championship and move on to the NCAA Tournament.
