New Castle, DE - The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington College were defeated by the visiting Chargers of Dominican College, 60-58 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Center.
Dominican took a 31-28 lead into halftime and extended that margin to as many as 14 points with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Wildcats clawed back, using a 19-5 run to get back into the game. Wilmington took the lead (58-57), when Nordia Henry scored on a lay-up. Shalissa Burgess (Englewood, NJ) put the Chargers ahead by one (59-58), and the Wildcats had a chance in the remaining seconds. A key turnover, followed by a quick foul, sent Dominican's Dana Rotio (Garfield, NJ) to the line for a single shot. Rotio missed the free throw opportunity, only to have the Chargers pick up the rebound. Rotio again went to the line and missed from the stripe. Dominican came up with another pivotal rebound and Jackie Tracey-Spitaleri (Bronx, NY) converted one of the next two chances from the foul line. The ‘Cats were able to come away with the rebound, but never got a shot off in the closing seconds as they turned the ball over the final trip down the court, sealing the two point victory for the Chargers.
Wilmington was led by freshman Amelia Simmons, who notched a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds. Junior center Nordia Henry added 13 points and 16 rebounds, while freshman Jamie Hensley chipped in with eight points, five rebounds, and three steals before fouling out.
The Chargers were led by Althea Chambers (Yonkers, NY), who had 12 points, five rebounds, and four steals in a solid all-around effort. Tracey-Spitaleri added 10 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Kristen Tracey (Bronx, NY) tallied 10 points, while Burgess had nine points and eight boards. Rotio chipped in with seven points, five assists, and seven steals, as she pressured the Wildcats all afternoon.
Neither team shot particularly well, as Wilmington connected on just over 36 percent of their shots, compared to Dominican's 35 percent. The Wildcats held the advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Chargers by a 47-40 margin. Dominican forced 30 Wildcat turnovers on the game and were able to convert those into 29 points.
