2010 Dominican College Softball Season Summary
The 2010 Dominican College Lady Chargers softball team had another very successful season under Head Coach Joe Burbridge. The team finished the season with an overall record of 37-16 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 23-3. DC won their second consecutive CACC Regular Season Title as they share the top spot with Caldwell College. The team went on to win their first ever CACC Tournament Championship and earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA East Regional Tournament, thus making their second consecutive NCAA East Regional appearance.
With a split over Caldwell College during the regular season, the Lady Chargers were given the top seed in the CACC Tournament. In first round action, the Lady Chargers defeated the eighth seeded Devils of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 6-1 and the fourth seeded Tigers of Holy Family University, 4-1, to advance into the winner’s bracket of the tournament. Day two action saw DC defeat the second seeded Caldwell College Cougars, 7-2 to move onto the CACC Championship. In the Championship, Dominican squared off against the third seeded Lions and host Georgian Court University. Forced to beat DC twice, GCU won a marathon game one, 11-10, but the Lady Chargers rallied from a 6-2 deficit to win the finale, 8-7.
Dominican earned the seventh seed in the NCAA East Regional Tournament hosted by the second-seeded Lions of Dowling College. In opening round action, DC faced the host and suffered a 6-2 loss. Facing elimination, the team went up against the #3 Pioneers of C.W. Post University and lost 2-1 to eliminate them from the tournament and end their season.
Senior third basemen, Cara Piasecki, led the team and ranked third in the conference in batting (.415), on-base percentage (.503) and RBIs (49). She ranked third in the CACC and second on the team in runs scored (48), fourth in the conference and third on the team in hits (61) and second on the team and fifth in the CACC in total bases (94). Piasecki led the team and was second in the conference in with 26 walks on the season. In her career, she has been named to the All-CACC Tournament Team three times, was the 2010 CACC Tournament MVP, earned her third consecutive All-CACC First Team honors this season, was named to the 2010 Daktronics Softball East All-Region Second Team and was named a 2010 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Star. She also set a new record for career home runs this season (31) and was named the Dominican College Softball Most Valuable Player.
Freshman pitcher/outfielder Delaney Childers had a stellar rookie campaign. Childers finished with a .387 batting average, and tallied 37 RBIs. She had 72 hits on the season, including 15 doubles, five triples and one home run. As a pitcher, she had a 22-9 record and a 1.67 ERA. She fanned 140 batters in 201.1 innings pitched. She was named the CACC and ECAC Rookie of the Year, named to the All-CACC Second Team, the 2010 Daktronics Softball East All-Region Second Team. She also earned three CACC Rookie of the Week honors, named to the All-CACC Tournament Team and set a program record for wins in a season (22).
Fellow freshman Julie Plante also had a fine season as she finished third on the Lady Chargers this season with a .385 batting average in 53 games played. She led the team and finished third in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with 74 hits, second on the team and third in the CACC in runs scored (54) and tied for the team lead with 15 doubles. For her efforts she received All-CACC Honorable Mention honors and was named to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All-Region Second Team.
Rookie Ashley Corrao also earned All-CACC Second Team honors as she ranked 11th in the CACC with a .368 batting average. She tallied 33 RBIs this season and had a career high seven RBIs in a victory over Wilmington University. Corrao sported a .391 on-base percentage and a .484 slugging percentage.
The Lady Chargers will graduate six players from the 2010 season, but with a very talented group of returners the 2011 season looks just as promising.
