Orangeburg, NY (4/15/11) The Dominican College softball team, currently ranked fourth in the NCAA East Region, swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header from the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College this afternoon in games played at the DC Softball Field. Dominican took game one, 10-1, and won the night cap, 5-0.
Game One: Dominican exploded for eight runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Catcher Ashley Corrao (Staten Island, NY) got things going as she drew a bases loaded walk to plate a run and desginated player Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun, VA) followed with a two-run single down the left field line. First basemen Paige Berzak (Cypress, CA) then hit an RBI single up-the-middle to make the score 4-0. Wassmann later scored on a wild pitcher and second basemen Brielle Kerscher (Staten Island, NY) delivered an RBI single to center field and a Griffin fielding error allowed a second run to score to increase the lead to 7-0. A one-out RBI single down the left field line by Deidre Jeppson plated the eighth run of the inning for the Lady Chargers.
DC added two runs in the second stanza as Corrao led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence and Kerscher hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field to score the 10th run for the Lady Chargers. CHC put a run on the board in their half of the fifth inning but that would be all as DC picked up the 10-1 victory.
Junior right-handed pitcher Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) improved to 9-5 on the season with the victory, allowing one run on six hits and collecting eight strikeouts in five innings of work.
Game Two: DC scored a run in the first as Jeppson led off the game with a double, moved to third on a ground out and then scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
Dominican added four runs in their half of the third inning as left fielder Ashley Martinez (Bloomfield, NJ) led off the inning with a double to left center and Jeppson followed with an RBI single through the left side. Pitcher Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH) delivered an RBI single to left field and Corrao later followed with her second home run of the day with a two-run blast to center field to put the Lady Chargers ahead 5-0.
Childers improved to 12-4 in the complete game shut-out victory, scattering just three hits and recording eight strikeouts.
