Caldwell, NJ (3/29/11) The Dominican College softball squad improved to 16-8 overall and 6-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play after defeating host, Caldwell College, 5-4 in eight innings and 3-0, this afternoon in a CACC double-header played at the Caldwell College Softball Field.
Game One: Caldwell College held a 2-0 lead in game one when the Lady Chargers got a run back in the top of the second inning as freshman designated player Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun, VA) hit her third home run of the season over the left field fence to make the score 2-1.
The Cougars re-claimed a two-run lead (3-1) with a run in the fourth, but a two-run top of the fifth inning for the Lady Chargers tied the score at 3-3. Sophomore second basemen Brielle Kerscher (Staten Island, NY) recorded her second home run of the season to lead off the inning with a shot to left field. Deidre Jeppson (Sylmar, CA) later got a one-out single through the left side and moved to second on the infield single by Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH). A single to left field off the bat of shortstop Julie Plante (Swansea, MA) brought in Jeppson to make the score 3-3.
CC scored a run in the bottom stanza to go ahead 4-3, but an RBI single through the left side with the bases loaded by Jeppson brought in a run to tie the score at 4-all.
In the eighth inning, Kerscher led things off with a double to center field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. A walk to Jeppson put two runners on and Delaney reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Kerscher to score and secure a 5-4 Lady Charger victory.
Right-handed hurler Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) picked up the complete game victory (8-3), allowing four runs on eight hits and two strikeouts. Pistilli also earned her 43rd career victory to break the school's previous record of 42 career victories set by Christine Stathes in 2008.
