SOFTBALL SWEEPS QUEENS COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (4/14/08) The Dominican College softball team extended their winning streak to seven games with a non-conference double-header sweep of Queens College this afternoon at the DC Softball Field. The Lady Chargers won the first game, 3-1 and took the night cap, 10-2 in five innings.
Game One: After 3 1/2 scoreless innings, DC got on the board in the fourth as senior Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) hit a one out single. After Chrystina Tirado (Rincon, Puerto Rico) came into run, she advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on the two out single by Danielle Garrison (Coatesville, PA).
Dominican added two runs in the sixth as shortstop Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) led off the inning with a home run and Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY) followed with a single. A double by left fielder Sarah Beck (Milton. NY) plated Terpstra and gave DC as 3-0 lead.
Queens scored a run in the seventh on a solo shot to left center by freshman Sara Koumou (Hicksville, NY) as DC went on to the 3-1 victory.
Senior Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) picked up her 14th complete game to improve to 10-8 on the season, scattering three hits and three strikeouts.
Knights pitcher Bryttne Nelson (Bonney Lake, WA) suffered the loos (4-8), allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and four strikeouts.
Game Two: The Lady Chargers scored in their first at bat as Beck singled to left field to score Terpstra who had a one out single to right center.
Queens took their first lead of teh day in the third as Sue Hurley (Rockaway Beach, NY) hit a one out single up the middle and Nelson followed with a two run shot over the center field fence to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage.
DC added back to back four run innings in the third and fourth as Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ) hit a two out double to center field to score two runs and freshman Kristi Dillon (Staten Island, NY) hit a two run blast over the center field fence in the third. In the fourth, Terpstra's sacrifice bunt scored a run and back to back RBI singles by Knuth and Beck extended the Charger lead to 7-1. Ollari followed with a two out RBI single to right center to put DC ahead 9-2.
In the bottom of the fifth second basemen Jessica
Martinieri (Tampa, Florida) led off the inning with a solo
home run to left field to give the Lady Chargers a 10-2 victory in
five innings.
Lady Charger Laurie Edwards (Riverhead, NY) got the win (4-3), allowing two runs on five hits. Knights hurler Jessica Hicks (West Babylon, NY) got the loss (3-5), allowing 10 runs on 14 hits.
With the sweep Dominican improves to 18-14 overall, while the Knights fall to 11-23 overall.
