LADY CHARGERS WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT WITH SWEEP OVER MERCY COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (4/13/08) The Dominican
College softball squad won their fifth straight game this afternoon
after sweeping a non-conference double-header from visiting Mercy
College Mavericks this afternoon at the DC Softball Field. DC
won the first game, 9-1 in five innings and took the night cap,
6-0.
Game One: DC opened the scoring in the second inning as pitcher Danielle Garrison (Coatsville, PA) led off the inning with a single up the middle. A one out single by catcher Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ) put two runners on and outfielder Shayla Esgro (Jermyn, PA) loaded the bases after getting hit by the pitch. Pinch hitter Kristi Dillon (Staten Island, NY) hit a double to center to clear the bases and give DC a 3-0 lead. A batter later she came in to score on the RBI single to center by short stop Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) and put the Lady Chargers up 4-0.
The Mavericks scored on a run top of the third as a DC error allowed the lead off run to get on and Ali Truss (Southington, CT) followed with a fielder's choice to get on first. With two outs, Kim Curry (Bristol, CT) hit an RBI single to right to score Truss and cut the lead to 4-1.
The Lady Chargers added three runs in the both as junior Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) hit a two run double to right center and came in to score on the RBI single to left center by Scarillo to bring the lead up to 7-1.
Dominican scored two runs in the fifth for the 9-1 victory as Beck got the RBI single to center to plate Piasecki who led the inning off with a walk.
Sophomore Garrison got the win to improve to 4-3 on the year, scattering just three hits and four strikeouts.
Maverick starter Stephanie Pereyo (Southington, CT) took the loss (2-7), allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and two strikeouts.
Game two: The Lady Chargers once again opened the scoring as Piasecki led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence.
Dominican added a run in the third as a sacrifice fly by senior Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) plated Piasecki who led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a Maverick error on a ball hit by Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY).
A one out single by Scarillo in the fourth brought in Jamie Ollari (Hopactong, NJ) who led off the inning with a walk and a double by Esgro scored a second run. A consecutive double by Piasecki plated Esgro and put the Lady Chargers up 5-0.
Beck hit a solo homer in the fifth over the center field fence as Dominican went on to the 6-0 victory.
Laurie Edwards (Riverhead, NY) evened her record at 3-3 with the complete game, scattering just two hits and four strikeouts.
Pereyo dropped her second game of the day (2-8) allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and three strikeouts.
With the sweep the Lady Chargers improve to 16-14 on the year, while the Mavericks fall to 6-17 overall.
