DOMINICAN SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH HOLY FAMILY UNIVERSITY
Orangeburg, NY (4/10/08) The Dominican College softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header this afternoon with Holy Family University at the DC Softball Field. The Tigers took the first game, 8-0, while the Lady Chargers won the night cap, 7-4.
Game One: The Tigers struck for four runs in the fifth as Francesca Garzio (Hamilton Square, NJ) led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third as Victoria Grayson (Williamstown, NJ) reached on a DC throwing error. Kristilym Obert (Fairless Hill, PA) then hit an RBI single to center field to plate Garzio. With two outs Lauren Armstrong (Williamstown, NJ) doubled down the right field line to score Grayson and Obert. Armstrong would later score on the RBI single to center field by Dana Pallotta (Levittown, PA).
Holy Family struck to for more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings as a DC error allowed two runs to score in the sixth and in the seventh back to back opening doubles by Armstrong and Pallotta brought in a run and foul out to right field forced the DC fielder into dead territory on the catch advanced two Tiger runners as they went on to the 8-0 shut out victory.
Sophomore hurler Jody Searfoss (Weatherly, PA) got the shut out win, allowing just two hits and 14 strikeouts in seven innings to improve to 7-3 on the year.
Lady Charger starter Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) took the loss (8-8) in 6 1/3 innings of work, allowing eight runs (three earned).
Game two: Once again, Holy Family University got on the board first as Obert led off the game with a single to center field. With two outs, Palotta blasted a two run shot over the center field fence to give the Tigers a 2-0 victory. The Tigers struck for another run in the second on an RBI single to center by Obert to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Lady Chargers got on the board in the second as Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) led off the inning with a single and sophomore Danielle Garrison (Coatesville, PA) followed with a single to put two on and nobody out. With two outs, freshman Shayla Esgro (Jermyn, PA) rocked a two run single to center to plate both Beck and Garrison and cut the lead to 3-2.
DC tied the game in the third as ECAC and CACC Player of the Week, Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) homered over the center field fence to tie the game at 3-3. The Lady Chargers took the lead in the fourth as Stathes led off the inning with a single to right field, moved to second on a ground out and went to third on a single to left field by Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ). A fielding error by the Tiger left fielder allowed Stathes to score and give Dominican their first lead of the day, 4-3.
Dominican added to the lead in the fifth on an sacrifice fly by Beck and an RBI single by Stathes to extend the lead to 6-3 and tacked on another insurance run in the sixth on a solo home run by Scarillo.
The Tigers got one run back in the seventh on a RBI single by Stephanie Kinnick (Middletown, NJ), but the Lady Chargers held on for the 7-4 win.
Dominican starter Garrison went three innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. Stathes came in to pitch the final four for the victory (9-8), allowing one run on four hits.
Tiger starter Angela DiBeneditto (Forest Hill, MD) took the loss (1-5) in five innings of work, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits.
With the split Dominican improves to 12-14 overall and 8-2 in
the CACC, while Holy Family University improves to 10-12 overall
and 8-2 in the CACC.
