OFFENSE LEADS LADY CHARGERS SOFTBALL IN SWEEP OF
GOLDEY-BEACOM COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (4/6/08) The Dominican
College softball team pounded out 24 hits in a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference (CACC) sweep over the visiting Lightning of
Goldey-Beacom College this afternoon at the DC Softball Field.
Game one: The Lady Chargers got on the board in the second inning as sophomore shortstop Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) continued to be hot at the plate with a three run blast over the center field fence to plate Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ) and Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) who had both reached base on GBC errors.
DC added a run in the third on a solo home run over the left field fence by junior Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) to give Dominican a 4-0 lead. The Chargers continued to dominate offensively with a run in the fourth on a RBI single by senior first basemen Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) which scored Piasecki who had recorded her third hit of the game with one out.
Dominican added two runs in the fifth as freshman pinch hitter Kristi Dillon (Staten Island, NY) singled in center fielder Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ) and Scarillo came in to score as Dillon was thrown out, trying to steal second as DC went on to the 7-0 shut out victory.
Stathes recorded her 11 complete game to improve her record to 6-7, allowing four hits and three strikeouts.
Game two: DC once again attacked early, scoring three runs in the first inning, as Beck's fielder's choice allowed Piasecki, who led off the inning with her fourth hit of the day, to score. Ollari's single up the middle with one out plated Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY) and Knuth who had received back to back walks earlier in the inning.
The Lady Chargers added five runs in the third inning as Dillon hit her first collegiate home run with a three run shot to left center. Piasecki hit her second home run and fifth hit of the day with two outs to right center to score Stathes who hit a one out single to right center and give DC a 8-0 lead.
In the fourth Dillon's RBI single to left gave her her fourth RBI in the game as pinch hitter Laurie Edwards (Riverhead, NY) came in to score as DC took the 9-0 victory in five innings.
Stathes evened her record at 7-7 with the complete game shut out, allowing just two hits and three strikeouts.
With the wins Dominican improves to 9-13 overall and 5-1 in the
CACC, while Goldey-Beacom College falls to 7-12 overall and 2-6 in
the CACC.
