SOFTBALL RALLIES TO DEFEAT ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (4/3/08) The Dominican College softball team rallied in the seventh inning of the second game to complete a non-conference sweep of the visiting Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College this afternoon at the DC Softball Field. With the wins, Dominican improves to 7-13 overall.
Game one: DC jumped out to a five run lead in the third, highlighted by two home runs. A three run blast by Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) put DC ahead 3-0 and designated player Danielle Garrison (Coatesville, PA) followed with a solo shot. Nicole Philpot (Dingmans Ferry, PA) singled and came in to score on an RBI single by senior Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) to give the Lady Chargers a 5-0 lead.
DC added a run in the fourth with their third home run of the game, this one by center fielder Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ). In the fifth, Ollari hit a two out double and came in to score on the RBI single by Garrison to extend the lead to 7-0.
The Spartans got on the board in the sixth as Amanda Brown (Islip Terrace, NY) led off the inning with a single and came in to score on the RBI single by Danielle Hart (Saugerties, NY). In the seventh, STAC added a run on the RBI single by Angela Squillini (Theills, NY) as DC went on to win, 7-2.
Senior Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) got the complete game victory (5-7), allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits. Spartan Shannon Donohue (Maybrook, NY) suffered the loss allowing seven runs on 11 hits.
Game two: DC continued to dominate on the offensive end with
another three home runs.
Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) hit two homers
in the game, both being lead off shots, one in the first inning and
one in the fifth. The home run in the fifth tied the game at
2-2 after the Spartans scored two runs in the first on a two run
blast by Karen Thorne (Fishkill, NY).
The Spartans regained a two run lead in the top of the sixth as Jess Goatz (Brewster, NY) led off the inning with a homer run and Thorne later reached on an error and scored on the RBI single to left by Kayla Cornish (Nanuet, NY).
DC rallied in the bottom of the sixth to once again tie the game as Garrison hit a two run blast to plate Ollari, who recieved a one out walk and stole second previously. The Spartans went ahead 5-4 with a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to left by Brown.
In the bottom of the seventh, with two on and one out, Beck singled home the tying run and catcher Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ) got the game winning RBI single as DC won the night cap, 6-5.
Garrison (2-3) got the complete game win, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and eight strikeouts. Spartan Goatz suffered the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits.
Dominican is back in action on Saturday when they host Wilmington University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action. Game time is 1pm at the DC Softball Field.
