Wildcats Sweep Dominican Softball
New Castle, DE (4/14/07) The Wildcats of Wilmington College received two strong seven-inning outings from the freshman pitching tandem of Kim Lawrence and Katie Turner and coupled that with some timely hitting on their way to sweeping the visiting Chargers of Dominican College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field. Wilmington took the opener by a score of 3-1 and completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.

Wilmington took the opener by a score of 3-1 and completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, Wilmingtonjumped on the board in the first inning sophomore catcher Kelly Schirmer singled home freshman third baseman Lindsay Watson who reached on a walk. The Chargers evened the score in the third on a RBI double by Kristine Knuth. The Wildcats answered back in the fourth as sophomore outfielder Lindsay Frye laced a RBI single up the middle to plate Schirmer. Wilmingtonadded an insurance run in the sixth on a RBI single to left field off the bat of Shustine Wilson.
Freshman hurler Kim Lawrence (13-2) went seven strong innings for the ‘Cats as she surrendered just one run on three hits while striking out five. Schirmer was 2-for-2 at the plate with a RBI and a run scored, while Frye and Wilson each tallied RBI singles. Senior outfielder Amanda Mucaria was 1-for-3 with a run scored and junior first baseman Tracey Nepi ended the game going 1for-2.
Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) took the loss for Dominican, as she gave up seven hits and three runs (all earned) in six innings of work. The Chargers received doubles from Knuth and Danielle Garrison, while Lauren Galladay picked up the other single for Dominican.
It was the Chargers who struck first in the second game, as a RBI double by Cara Piasecki plated Jackie Terpstra in the top of the fourth inning. Wilmingtonwould answer right back in the bottom half of the frame when freshman second baseman Heather Bush knocked home Mucaria and Schirmer. Bush later scored on a passed ball by Charger catcher Sarah Beck to make the scored 3-1. The Wildcats added three more in the fifth when Schirmer ripped a bases-clearing double to right center field that scored Nepi, Watson, and junior Nicole Hays.
Freshman pitcher Katie Turner (7-6) went the distance for Wilmington, and gave up one run (earned) on seven hits while striking out two. The Wildcats were led by Schirmer, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Bush added a pair of RBIs and a run. Tracey Nepi was 1-for-1 with a run scored.
Garrison (Coatesville, PA) took the loss
for the Chargers, as she gave up three runs (one earned) on two
hits. Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth,
NJ) had two doubles for Dominican, while
Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY) was 2-for-3 with
a run scored. With the wins, Wilmingtonimproves to 10-2 in the CACC and 20-8 on the season,
while Dominican drops to 5-5 in the conference and 13-11
overall.
