Dominican Opens 2007 With Split At Gene Cusic Classic
Fort Myers, FL (3/4/07) The Dominican College softball team opened up the 2007 season with a split at the Gene Cusic Classic this afternoon in Fort Myer's, Florida. The Lady Chargers dropped the opening game to Wayne State College, 6-1, but dominated St. Anselm College, 10-0 in six innings in game two.

Fort Myers, FL (3/4/07) The Dominican College softball team opened up the 2007 season with a split at the Gene Cusic Classic this afternoon in Fort Myer's, Florida. The Lady Chargers dropped the opening game to Wayne State College, 6-1, but dominated St. Anselm College, 10-0 in six innings in game two.
In game one, WSC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-0 lead. DC scored their first run in the sixth as freshman Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) lead off the inning with a triple and scored as the next batter, junior Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) singled. Wayne State added another run in the bottom of the sixth for the 6-1 victory.
Senior pitcher Michelle Bark (West Milford, NJ) suffered the loss, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on six hits. Laurie Edwards (Riverhead, NY) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings allowing one run on four hits.
In game two, the Lady Chargers erupted for 13 hits and held a 4-0 lead at the end of three innings.
Knuth went 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while third basemen Jacki Terpstra (Middletown, NY) went 2-3 with a run scored. Freshman right fielder Lauren Galladay (Aberdeen, NJ) had a solide game, going 2-3 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored.
Junior pitcher Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) pitched a complete game, allowing five hits over six innings and recording four strikeouts in her first win of the season.
With the split, the Lady Chargers are 1-1 at the Gene Cusic Classic. After an off day tomorrow, the team returns to action on Tuesday with another double header. The first game will be against Assumption College and the second will be re-match against Wayne State College.
