2012 Dominican College Men’s Soccer Season Summary
The Dominican College men’s soccer team had another successful season under first-year head coach and DC soccer alum, Colin Hodge. The team won their second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament Championship in the past three seasons.
DC finished with an overall record of 10-5-4 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 7-3-1. The Chargers finished second in the conference in the regular season and thus earned the second seed in the CACC Tournament.
Dominican squared off against seventh-seeded Tigers from Holy Family University in the opening round and played to a 1-1 tie after both regulation and two overtime periods. In the shootout, the Chargers defeated the Tigers, 4-2 to advance to the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, the team took on the Nyack College Warriors, the sixth seed in the tournament. Dominican came back from a 1-0 deficit with four unanswered goals to advance to the CACC Championships.
In the Championship contest against the top seed and nationally ranked, Post University, the Chargers once again saw the score tied 1-1 after both regulation and two overtime periods. DC won the shootout, 3-2, as junior goalie Andres Ruiz made a tremendous save to give the team the championship. Pedro De Araujo, Jorge Zubillaga and Manuel Valencia all converted their kicks in the shootout.
Ruiz was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament and to the All-Tournament Team. He also was a Second Team All-CACC selection. He started all 19 games in the Charger net this season and finished the year with a 1.02 goals against average (GAA) and a .792 save percentage. Ruiz ranked in the top five in the CACC in save percentage, saves, goals against and goals against percentage.
Junior midfielder Sony Narro led the team in scoring (8 goals) and points (21 points) this season, while finishing fifth in the conference in scoring. He also finished in a three-way tie for first place on the team in assists (5 assists). For his efforts, he was named to the All-CACC First Team and to the NCAA Division II Men All-East Region Third Team.
Zubillaga was an All-CACC First Team honoree and finished second on the team in scoring. He finished second in the conference in shots and seventh in goals.
Senior De Araujo made his first appearance on the All-CACC First Team this season and was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team. De Araujo was also named to the NCAA Division II Men All-East Region Third Team.
Teammates Christopher Walsh, Clodalain Lolo and senior Alex Rodier were all named to the CACC All-Tournament Team.
Senior Matthew Shutter earned his second consecutive All-CACC Honorable Mention accolades.
Dominican graduates four players this season: Johnathan De Oliveira, De Araujo, Dennis Kcira, Rodier and Shutter.
