Orangeburg, N.Y. (1/5/19) The Dominican College men's basketball team used a 17-0 game opening run to charge past the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College, 92-74, this afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game played on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.
With the win, Dominican improves to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the CACC.
Dominican opened the game with the first 17 points as junior guard Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, N.Y.) connected on back-to-back treys and would later use a Tavon Ginyard (Brentwood, N.Y.) layup to extend the lead to 26-8 with 9:23 left in the half and would cruise into the intermission with a 53-24 lead.
Rodwell delivered 13 first half points, while guard Daniel Grant (Middletown, N.Y.) added 11 points.
The Charger offense shot 55.6% (20-36) from the floor, 50.0% (4-8) from the three point arc and 69.2% (9-13) from the foul line in the half.
A three-point bucket from freshman Wahaad Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 8:07 left in regulation gave Dominican their biggest lead of the contest, 83-49, with 8:07 left to play, but a 25-9 closing run by the Griffins made the score 92-74 at the sound of the final horn.
Rodwell led four Chargers in double figures with 18 points and seven rebounds, while also adding three assists.
Grant and senior Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn.) each netted 13 points and two rebounds with Grant contributing five assists and three steals.
Junior Jonathan Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) had a game best seven assists to go along with three steals and six rebounds.
Donnell Hill (Staten Island, N.Y.) came off the bench to score eight points and six boards. Johnson finished with seven points in nine minutes of action.
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to CACC North Division foe, Caldwell University.
