Philadelphia, PA (2/11/12) The Dominican College men's basketball team had a five game winning streak snapped by the visiting Rams of Philadelphia University, 51-49, this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Coach Baxter Court. Today was also the 25th Annual Bobby Mulligan Memorial Basketball game played at the Hennessy Center.
The Rams scored the game's first five points, but the Chargers quickly responded with a 16-3 tear to claim a 16-9 advantage with just under 13 minutes left in the half. Philadelphia cut the lead to a point twice, but a layup from senior Michael Calzonetti* (Gloucester, NJ) with 2:35 to go gave Dominican a 24-21 lead at halftime.
The second half saw the score seesaw back-and-forth until the Rams took a 46-42 lead with 3:58 remaining. A trey from guard Leon Porter II* (Laurel, MD) less than 10 seconds later brought the Chargers within a point (46-45), but Philadelphia answered back with a three point shot of their own to hold a 49-45 lead.
Porter responded again with a layup and then went 2-2 from the free throw line to tie the score at 49-49 with 28 ticks on the clock. A Ram basket put them ahead with 0:03 to go and a DC shot at the buzzer just missed giving Philadelphia the 51-49 win.
Porter led three Chargers in double figures with 15 points, adding four assists and six rebounds. Center Cory Quimby* (Otisville, NY) tallied 14 points and 13 boards for his 16th double-double of the season and sophomore Khaleev Ginyard (Brentwood, NY) netted 10 points in the loss.
With the loss Dominican now stands at 14-8 overall and 7-7 in the CACC.
During halftime, Dominican College honored the memory of Bobby Mulligan and awarded the annual Bobby Mulligan Memorial Scholarship to Preston Smith.
