2010-2011 Dominican College Men’s Basketball Summary
The Dominican College men’s basketball team finished their season with an overall record of 16-13 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 12-5.
The Chargers finished the regular season in third place in the CACC North Division and earned the North Division third seed in the CACC Tournament. In the tournament, Dominican faced off against the second seed, Post University, in a quarter-final match up where the Chargers suffered a tough, 71-68 loss to end their season.
The highlight of the season for the Chargers was the CBS College Sports nationally televised game which took place on January 22, 2011 at the Hennessy Center against Nyack College. Dominican defeated their arch rival, 73-58, in front of nearly 1200 fans at the Hennessy Center.
Senior center and team captain, Almin Hodzic, had a breakout senior season and led the team with averages of 14.8 points per-game, 8.9 rebounds, 3.17 blocks and 56-percent shooting from the field. He ranked 11th in the conference in scoring, third in rebounds and field-goal percentage and second in blocks. Hodzic was named to the All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) First Team, the 2010-11 Division II Daktronics Men's Basketball East All-Region Team, was selected as a 2010-2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Star and was named to the e All-Met Division II Men's Basketball First Team. He was also named the Dominican College men’s basketball Most Valuable Player and earned the Dominican College Top Senior Male Scholar Athlete Award. Hodzic was also part of the inaugural class of the New York Sigma Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, a National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society and was named to the CACC All-Academic Team. He was also a CACC Player of the Week once this year.
Fellow captain and sophomore guard, Leon Porter, earned All-CACC Second Team honors this season after earning All-CACC Third Team and Rookie of the Year honors in 2010. He was second on the team in scoring (14.4 ppg) and led the team in both assists (139) and steals (41). He ranked 12th in the CACC in scoring, third in assists, 5th in free throw percentage, 12th in steals, 14th in three point field-goal percentage, 10th in three point field-goals made and 5th in assist/turnover ratio. He was also named to the All-Met Division II Men’s Basketball Second Team.
Rookie Khaleev Ginyard had a stellar campaign and was named the CACC Rookie of the Year after averaging 11.4 ppg. He finished third on the team in scoring and was in the conference in three-pointers made per-game (2.82) and 10th in three-point field-goal percentage (.376).
DC loses one valuable member of the starting lineup in Hodzic, but with the return of four starters and a strong nucleus of players, head coach Joe Clinton will look ahead to a successful 2011-2012 campaign.
