HODZIC TABBED CACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Almin Hodzic of Dominican College has been tabbed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 16. Holy Family University's Alberto Munoz and Chestnut Hill College's Khadim Ndiaye were named Co-Rookies of the Week.
New Haven, CT (1/18/11) Almin Hodzic of Dominican College has been tabbed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 16. Holy Family University's Alberto Munoz and Chestnut Hill College's Khadim Ndiaye were named Co-Rookies of the Week.
Hodzic, a 6-10 senior center from Budd Lake, N.J., nearly posted a triple-double in a victory over Felician with 23 points, 16 rebounds and eight blocks, while dishing out three assists. He shot 9-for-13 from the field and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the win to notch his fourth consecutive double-double.
Munoz, a 6-4 freshman guard from Morristown, N.C., averaged 17.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per-game in a 1-1 week for the Tigers. He recorded 22 points, 14 rebounds and four steals in an upset win over Goldey-Beacom.
Ndiaye, a 6-5 freshman forward from Long Beach, N.Y., led the Griffins to their first conference victory of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds in an 81-74 triumph over the University of the Sciences.
Honorable Mention
Adewale Adefemi, USci (Sr., F, 6-4, Chesilhurst, NJ) - In a 1-1 week, averaged 19.0 poins, 11.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per-game.
Garvin McAlister, Post (Sr., G, 5-11, Norwich, CT) - Tallied 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a victory at Felician.
Gage Daye, Bloomfield (Sr., G, 6-2, Newark, NJ) - Led BC to a win over Nyack with 29 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Brandon Whitaker, Concordia (So, G, 6-1, Harlem, NY) - Poured in 31 points and added six assists and three blocks against Caldwell.
CACC Notes
Bloomfield - The Deacons stayed perfect in CACC play this week, running their conference record to 6-0 and 9-4 overall with a road victory against North Division rival Nyack College. Senior guard Gage Daye was the top performer in the win, going 8-17 from the field and 10-11 from the charity stripe to pour in a game-high 29 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Fellow senior Ryan Rodrigues posted his second performance in which he converted on at least five three-point attempts this season, notching 17 points and finishing 5-6 from beyond the arc. Rookie Steve Henderson notched 11 points in the win, while Matt Wafula rounded out the Deacons in double-figures with 10 points.
Caldwell - The Cougars topped Concordia on the road Monday, 82-81 in their only game last week. Six Cougars scored in double figures in the win, led by junior Don Trifari's 14 points. Trifari made all four of his field goal attempts, including a pair of threes, and all four of his free throw attempts. Freshman guard Patrick O'Connell dished out a career-high nine assists, as the Cougars beat the Clippers for the second time in eight days. Caldwell hosts Nyack on Wednesday before playing at Goldey-Beacom on Saturday.
Chestnut Hill - Chestnut Hill College earned their first CACC win with an 81-74 victory at the University of the Sciences on Tuesday, January 11. Freshman forward Khadim Ndiaye (Long Beach, NY) led the Griffins against the Devils with 17 points and 11 rebounds, his third double-double in three starts this season.
Concordia - The Clippers took on Caldwell in CACC play last Monday. At the end of a back and forth battle, the Cougars took the lead in the last minute and stole the game, 82-81. Brandon Whitaker put up a career high 31 points in the game while center William Eason notched his 1,000th career point as he put up 21 points and 19 rebounds.
Dominican - Since Dec. 9, the Chargers have won eight of their last nine contests to even their record at 8-8 and improve to 4-2 in the CACC. Senior center Almin Hodzic has averaged 16.6 points and 10.3 rebounds in the past nine games, while freshman guard Khaleev Ginyard is averaging 13.0 ppg. Sophomore guard Leon Porter is netting 12.3 points and dishing out 4.9 assists per-game. Dominican will be making its first nationally televised game appearance on Saturday, Jan. 22, with a home game against rival Nyack College. The game will be aired on CBS College Sports Network at 11:30 am.
Felician - Senior frontcourtmen Devon Young and Kashiff Foster have become the fifth and sixth players in Felician men's history to reach 100 career games played. Young has never missed a game in his career, starting all 102, while Foster currently sits tied for sixth on the career list with 100. The all-time school leader is Jerrell Jeffries with 111 (2000-04).
Holy Family - Holy Family split a pair of conference games this past week. The Tigers defeated Goldey-Beacom College (62-51) Thursday night and fell to cross-town rival Philadelphia University Saturday afternoon. (75-61). Thursday's win against Goldey-Beacom surpassed last years win total of three for the Tigers. Freshman Alberto Munoz led the offensive attack with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds against the Lightning. Munoz also knocked down six three-pointers (6-10). Holy Family will host Concordia College on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 3 p.m.
Post - Garvin McAlister tallied 22 points in Post University's 65-48 victory over Felician last Thursday. McAlister's efforts have led the Eagles to four straight conference wins. It is the fifth time this season he has led the Eagles in scoring. The next milestone for the senior guard is to break the 300 career rebound mark, as he currently has 267 as the team's leading rebounder. Up next, Post will host Concordia on Wednesday night. The Clippers are the only team the Eagles have lost to in conference play this season (5-1). Then it is off to Chestnut Hill for a CACC contest Saturday afternoon.
USciences - The Devils record stands at 7-5, their best 12-game start since an 8-4 mark in 2003-04…In the most recent NCAA Statistical report for Division II (1/9/11), the Devils are ranked 49th in scoring defense, allowing just 65.1 points per game, 18th in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to just 38.4% shooting and 44th in three-point field goal percentage defense (30.2%)….Adewale Adefemi (Chesilhurst, N.J.) ranks 12th nationally in rebounds per game, averaging 10.2…William Kernan (Medford, N.J.) ranks 65th nationally in steals per game, averaging 2.1…Adefemi recorded his sixth double-doubles of the season against Chestnut Hill last week….Adefemi scored 38 points this week to move into 22nd place on the Devils all-time scoring list with 1,212 points… The Devils have just one game this week, hosting Felician College on Saturday at the Bobby Morgan Arena.
