CHARGERS BASKETBALL EDGED BY SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY

Nyack, NY (12/3/10)  The Dominican College men's basketball team suffered a heart-breaking, 68-67 loss to Slippery Rock University in the opening game of the Nyack College Tournament held on the campus of Nyack College this evening in a non-conference game.

The Chargers scored the first nine points of the contest and extended their lead to 16-5 with 11:19 left before the intermission.  Slippery Rock came back to take a 17-16 lead with 6:46 left, but DC came back to take a 34-27 lead into the break.

Dominican regained an 11 point advantage (44-33) early in the second half and led 50-38 with 12:31 left in regulation.  DC had a 60-52 lead when SRU went on a 12-4 run to tie the game at 64-64 with just under two minutes to go.

Two free throws from sophomore guard Leon Porter (Laurel, MD) put Dominican ahead 66-64 and the team later later 67-65 after a Khaleev Ginyard (Brentwood, NY) with 0:21 on the clock.  A Slippery Rock free throw cut the lead to a point and a jumper with 0:02 remaining put them ahead 68-67.  The Chargers got a final shot off before the buzzer that hit the rim, but fell short of going in the hoop for the final 68-67 Slippery Rock victory.

Senior center Almin Hodzic (Budd Lake, NJ) led three Charger starters in double figures with 22 points.  Porter netted 20 points and had a team leading seven assists, while rookie Ginyard scored 13 points in the loss.

With the loss Dominican falls to 0-6 on the season.

DC returns to action tomorrow when they take on Merrimack College at 2pm in game three of the Nyack College Tournament.
