Philadelphia, PA (2/13/10) The Dominican College men's basketball team turned back host Chestnut Hill College, 84-72, this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action at Sorgenti Arena.
Freshman guard Leon Porter (Laurel, MD) led four Chargers in double figures with 24 points, shooting 9-10 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Mike Calzonetti (Gloucester, NJ) tallied a career high 15 points and seven rebounds, while rookie Gerald Hill (Gwynn Oak, MD) contributed 12 points off the bench in the victory. Freshman Preston Smith (Mays Landing, NJ) scored 11 points.
The Griffins took an early 9-5 lead, but a 9-1 run by DC put them up 14-10 and later extended their lead to 29-17 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. The Chargers outscored the Griffins 10-6 in the last five minutes to take a 39-23 lead into the intermission.
Dominican shot well in the first half going 16-27 (59.3%) and 6-12 (50.0%) from the three point line.
DC continued to dominate in the second half as they built up a 50-30 lead with 14:53 to go in the contest. They would hold a double-digit lead until the 3:27 mark when two CHC free-throws cut the lead to 67-59. That would be as close as they would get as Dominican went on to the 84-72 victory.
With the win Dominican improves to 11-14 overall and 7-7 in the CACC, while Chestnut Hill falls to 10-12 overall and 6-7 in the CACC.
The Chargers are back in action on Tuesday when they host Wilmington University in a CACC contest scheduled to begin at 8pm on Coach Baxter Court.
