QUEENS NIPS DOMINICAN WHILE CALDWELL DEFEATS MERCY AT JAMES CLANCY TOURNAMENT
Orangeburg, NY (1/3/10) Queens College scored a basket with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation to nip host Dominican, 65-64 in the finale of the 4th Annual James Clancy Tournament this afternoon on Coach Baxter Court. In the first game of the day, the Cougars of Caldwell College earned their first win of the season over the Mavericks of Mercy College73-50.
Dominican took an early 12-7 lead in the first stanza only to see the Knights rally back with 13 unanswered points over a span of about seven minutes to take a 20-12 lead. Trailing by nine (26-17) with 2:32 left before the intermission, the Chargers charged back to close out the first half with a 7-0 run and cut the deficit to 26-24.
QC opened up the second half with a 11-6 run to regain a 35-30 advantage with 17:01 on the clock, but DC once again answered back with an 11-1 spurt to re-take the lead at 41-36 and lead by as many as 46-40 with 11:28 remaining in regulation.
With the game tied 61-61 with 1:00 to go the Knights converted two free throws to take a 63-61 lead with just over 34 seconds. A big and-one play by junior center Almin Hodzic (Budd Lake, NJ) with 0:15 on the clock put the Chargers up 64-63. A jump shot in the paint by Queens with 0:01 left in regulation gave them the one point advantage and eventual 65-64 victory.
Freshman guard Leon Porter (Laurel, MD) led all scorers in the game with 21 points. McManus finished with 15 points, while Hodzic had the game's only double-double with 10 points and 10 caroms, while adding three blocks.
Senior guard Khaleef Allicott (Brooklyn, NY) led the Knights with 20 points, while Akim Neverson (Brooklyn, NY) tallied 11 points and a team leading eight rebounds in the victory.
With the win Queens improves to 6-4, while Dominican drops to 7-7.
Game One: Matt Cohen (Forked River, NJ) led the Cougars with 18 points and 12 rebounds with guard Nik Otovic (Serbia) chipping in 13 points in six assists as Caldwell cruised to a 73-50 victory. Malcolm Austin (Albany, NY) came off the bench to net 10 points.
Mercy was led by Hassan Powell (Bridgeport, CT) and Tyler Jones (Montclair, NJ) who each had 10 pionts, with Powell adding eight rebounds in the loss.
Caldwell improved to 1-9, while Mercy falls to 0-11 on the season.
Dominican is back in action on Thursday when they return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action with a home game against Bloomfield College. Game time is set for 8pm on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
