QUEENS AND DOMINICAN WIN ON DAY ONE OF 4TH ANNUAL JAMES CLANCY TOURNAMENT

Orangeburg, NY (1/2/10)  Queens College defeated Caldwell College and host Dominican topped Mercy College this afternoon at the 4th Annual James Clancy Tournament being held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.

Mercy jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first half but Dominican charged back with eight straight points to take a 12-8 lead.  The Mavericks held a 31-26 lead with 2:28 to go before the intermission but a 5-0 spurt by DC, capped off by a trey from freshman Preston Smith (Mays Landing, NJ) knotted the game at 31-31.  A Mercy layup ended the first half with the Mavericks holding the 33-31 lead.

Dominican opened up the second stanza with a 13-1 run as senior forward Zach Huston (Binghamton, NY) netted eight of the points to give DC a 44-34 lead with 14:19 on the clock.  The Chargers stayed hot in the second half and never lost the lead as they went on to the 73-49 victory.

Huston led all scorers with a season high 22 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.  Sophomore Mike Calzonetti (Gloucester, NJ) had a great game off the bench for the chargers with 14 points (7-10 from the floor) and grabbed a team leading eight rebounds.  Junior center Almin Hodzic (Budd Lake, NJ) tallied 12 points and seven rebounds.  Senior forward Brendan McManus (Pearl River, NY) had a game leading five steals.

Junior Manny Garcia (Bronx, NY) paced the Mavericks with 13 points and eight rebounds.  Tyler Jones (Montclair, NJ) came off the bench to net 11 points and six boards, while Bryan Van Cott (Oyster Bay, NY) scored 10 points.

With the victory Dominican improves to 7-6 overall, while Mercy falls to 0-10 on the season.

Game One:   In the first game of the day the Knights of Queens College defeated Caldwell College, 66-53.

Lamonte Lans (Spring Valley, NY) led four Knights in double figures with 12 points, while Khaleef Allicott (Brooklyn, NY) added 11 points.  Terell Simmons (Coney Island, NY) and Akim Neverson (Brooklyn, NY) each scored 10 points and combined for 15 caroms in the victory.

Junior Antonio Brimely (Paterson, NJ) led the Cougars with 15 points and eight boards.  Sophomore Don Trifari (Towaco, NJ) netted 12 points, while Matt Cohen (Forked River, NJ) grabbed eight rebounds.

With the victory Queens improves to 5-4 overall, while Caldwell falls to 0-9.

Tomorrow's action features Caldwell taking on Mercy College at 2pm and Queens will face Dominican College at 4pm for the finale of the 4th Annual James Clancy Tournament.
