RIVERHAWKS SNAP CHARGERS BASKETBALL WIN STREAK

Lowell, MA (12/8/07)  Sophomore C Ali Kanaan (Montreal, QUE) scored 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished five assists as UMass Lowell defeated Dominican College, 65-52, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men’s basketball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.

The win was the second straight for the River Hawks, who improved to 3-4 entering Tuesday night’s game at Philadelphia University (6:00), the first of five straight games away from home.

The loss was the first of the year for the Chargers, who slipped to 4-1.

Kanaan converted 5 of 8 field goals in 26 minutes while senior G Jamael Lynch (Brooklyn, NY) led all scorers with 15 points. Sophomore F Victor Colon (Chicago, IL) added 11 points before drawing his fifth foul with 3:40 left to play.

Senior G Dashon Harper (Columbus, OH) chipped in 10 points, converting all eight of his free throws, including four in the final 34 seconds. Harper also grabbed seven rebounds and dished three assists.

Junior F Dato Sakvarelidze (Tblisi, Republic of Georgia) led Dominican with 10 points, converting 4 of 8 field goals, and grabbed five rebounds.

The River Hawks led 41-37 with 11:32 left in the game and used a 14-4 run to grab a 55-41 cushion with 4:46 to play. Colon led the spurt with a pair of treys while freshman F Connor Wetzel (Cincinnati, OH) added a conventional 3-point play, one of two on the afternoon.

UML never let the Chargers within nine points the rest of the way and converted six free throws, including four by Harper, over the final 34 seconds.

The River Hawks raced out to a 19-5 lead as Lynch buried a trey and a free throw to lead five different scorers in the run. Dominican, however, outscored UML 22-9 the rest of the half to go into the break trailing by one, 28-27. Junior F Will Carty (Bronx, NY) and freshman G Tim Matchett (Pitman, NJ) each scored four points in the run.
