2010 Dominican College Baseball Season Summary
The Dominican College baseball team finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 28-18 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 25-5. The team finished the regular season in second place and made their 25th appearance in the 26-year history of the program in the CACC Tournament after garnishing the second seed.
In the opening round of the CACC Tournament, the team defeated the third seeded Golden Falcons of Felician College, 3-2 to advance to the winner’s bracket. DC advanced to the CACC Championship after posting an 11-7 victory over the fifth seeded Eagles of Post University in their second game of the tournament. Dominican faced the Eagles in the Championship and after losing the first game, 1-0, brought home the title with a 5-4 second game victory.
Dominican earned the conference’s automatic bid the NCAA East Regional Tournament and their third berth in program history. The Chargers were seeded sixth in the six team regional which was hosted by the top seeded Owls of Southern Connecticut. In the first round DC faced SCSU and held a 4-2 lead after five innings, but the host rallied to pull out an 8-4 victory and send the Chargers into the loser’s bracket of the tournament. Facing elimination the team squared off against the fifth-seeded Pioneers of C.W. Post University and ended their season with a 4-1 loss.
Senior first basemen Tommy Maloney had a great finish to his career as he finished third in the CACC and led the Chargers with a .380 batting average. He led the team and ranked fifth in the CACC in slugging percentage, second in the CACC and led the team in on-base percentage and led the team and tied for second in the conference in doubles. He had a conference leading 37 walks this season. Maloney was named to the All-CACC First Team, the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-East Region First Team, the NCBWA All-East Region First Team and to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division II East All-Region Second Team.
Fellow senior Willie Mann had a .974 fielding percentage this season with 81 put outs and 71 assists with only four errors. On the offensive end, he sported a .278 batting average, .313 slugging percentage and a .364 on-base percentage. He had previously been named to the All-CACC Second Team, the 2010 Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association Gold Glove East All-Region Team and to the 2010 Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Gold Glove Team.
Senior pitcher, Todd Craig led the CACC and the Chargers with eight wins on the season to have an 8-2 record. He had an ERA of 2.63 in 61.2 innings with 42 strikeouts and an opposing batting average of .258. For his efforts, he was named to the All-CACC Second Team. Sophomore right-handed pitcher, Dave Bartuska, had a nice first season with the Chargers as he sported a 7-2 record and a 2.40 ERA this season. He ranked fifth in the CACC in ERA, third in opposing batting average and strikeouts and tied for fourth in wins. He was named to the All-CACC First Team, the CACC All-Tournament Team, the Daktronics NCAA Division II East All-Region Second Team and to the 2010 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division II East All-Region Second Team.
Junior designated player, Dan Robinson, finished second on the team and fifth in the CACC with a .347 batting average. He ranked fifth in the conference and leads the Chargers with 35 RBIs. He was named to the All-CACC Second Team and to the 2010 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division II East All-Region Second Team.
Teammates Tony Blake and Justin Moore also earned All-CACC honors as both were named to the Second Team. Blake, a freshman outfielder, finished third on the team with a .324 batting average. He's tallied 46 hits and 32 RBIs in 40 games played this season with a .437 slugging percentage and a .406 on-base percentage. Moore, a sophomore closing pitcher, tallied seven saves this season. He finished second in the CACC in saves and ranked third in the conference in appearances and had a 2-3 record with an ERA of 2.97.
With the loss of three senior starters, the 2011 Chargers should return a talented roster of veterans to lead them to another successful season.
