2011 Dominican College Baseball Season Summary
The Dominican College baseball team finished the 2011 season with an overall record of 28-17 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 26-4. The team won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular season title and made their 26th appearance in the 27-year history of the program in the CACC Tournament after garnishing the top seed.
In the opening round of the CACC Tournament, the team defeated the fifth-seeded Devils from the University of the Sciences, 7-0 to move into the winner’s bracket. On day two, the Chargers fell to second-seeded, Wilmington University, 3-0 and had to play in an elimination game against #3 Post University where they advanced to the CACC Championship round with a 7-0 victory. In the title game, DC fell to Wilmington University, 10-3 to end their season.
Senior right-fielder Dan Robinson led the team this season with a .318 batting average, .438 slugging percentage, four home runs and 56 hits, while recording his 200th career hit in the tournament victory over USciences. He started all 45 games this season for the Chargers. Robinson finished fifth in the conference in hitting and third in hits. He was named to the named to the All-CACC First Team, the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) All-East Region Second Team, the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) East All-Region Second Team and received the Dominican College Baseball Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award.
Junior right-handed pitcher, Dave Bartuska, led the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and the Chargers in wins after posting an 9-2 record during this season. He was fourth in the conference and leads the team with an ERA of 1.59, tallying 86 strikeouts in 79.1 innings pitched. Opponents hit just .205 against him. During the pre-season, Bartuska was selected as a pre-season All-America selection by Baseball America. He was named to the All-CACC First Team, the CACC All-Tournament Team, the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) NCAA Division II East All-Region First Team and the Rawlings/ABCA NCAA Division II All-American Third Team.
Fellow junior pitcher, Justin Moore, finished the season with an 8-1 record and a 1.67 ERA. He had a perfect 1.00 fielding percentage and made 10 put outs on the season with 33 assists. All three runners that attempted to steal on him were thrown out. He was named to the East Region Gold Glove Team and earned Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) NCAA Division II Gold Glove Team accolades.
Teammate Marco Moreno also earned Rawlings East Region Gold Glove Team honors after posting a .954 fielding percentage this season. He made 80 put outs with just 10 errors in 41 games played. Senior catcher Robert Iglesias earned All-CACC Second Team honors after finishing the year with a .304 batting average and a .348 slugging percentage. Second basemen Mario Lopez also earned All-CACC Second Team accolades after sporting a .299 average this season to place him second on the team and 13th in the CACC. He is second on the team in home runs and tied for third in stolen bases. Sophomore infielder Andrew Camardella finished in the top five on the team in hitting and finished with a .982 fielding percentage in 40 games played to be named to the All-CACC Second Team.
With the loss of five seniors, the 2012 Chargers should return a talented roster of veterans to lead them to another successful season.
