#1 DOMINICAN BASEBALL SWEEPS PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY

Orangeburg, NY (4/18/09)  The #1 Dominican College baseball team wrapped up the season series against Philadelphia University with a sweep this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) baseball action.  The Chargers won the first game, 10-8 and won the night cap 6-2.

Dominican took a 1-0 lead in the second after taking advantage of a Ram error.  The Rams answered back with six runs over the next two innings to take a 6-1 lead.  DC retaliated with six runs over the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-6 lead.  An RBI double by left fielder Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY) and a sacrifice fly to right by freshman Alexi Colon (Millville, NJ) cut the Ram lead to 6-3.  An RBI single down the right field line by freshman Armando Alvarez (Miami, FL) and an RBI triple to center by junior Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) brought Dominican within a run, 6-5.

In the fifth shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) delivered an RBI single to center and Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) scored on wild pitch to give DC a 7-6 lead.  Dominican scored runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings as Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) hit an RBI single up the middle, designated hitter Michael Munoz (Bronx, NY) had an RBI single through the left side and Yordis Veras (Jamaica, NY) scored on a wild pitch for the 10-8 victory.

Charger starter Jack Crawford (Montgomery, NY) picked up the win to improve to 3-1 after allowing eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits and eight strikeouts.  Freshman Justin Moore (Wantagh, NY) picked up his 12th save of the season after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

In game two, DC trailed 2-1 until a five run seventh inning lifted them to a 6-2 win.  An RBI single by freshman Xavier Bonilla (Bronx, NY) scored a run in the fourth. 

In the seventh one run scored on the fielder's choice by Alvarez and an RBI single to right field by Maloney scored another run.  An RBI ground out by Munoz put Dominican up 3-1 and Mann delivered a two-out RBI triple to right field.  Mann later scored on a passed ball for the eventual 6-2 victory.

Junior Todd Craig (Shenandoah, PA) got the win (4-2) after allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and five strikeouts.

With the victories Dominican improves to 25-9 overall and 13-5 in the CACC.
