CHARGERS BASEBALL WINS TO ADVANCE TO CACC CHAMPIONSHIPS

New Castle DE (5/10/08) No. 2 Caldwell College and No. 3 Dominican College have advanced to the championship round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament with victories today at Wilmington's Wilson Field. Caldwell upended top seeded Philadelphia, 2-0, and Dominican followed with a 7-1 win over the Rams to eliminate Philadelphia from the double-elimination tournament. Caldwell, by virtue of going 2-0 thus far, needs to beat Dominican just once to earn the championship, while the Chargers will have to beat Caldwell twice to claim the title.

Dominican (28-24) followed with a convincing win 7-1 win over Philadelphia behind a complete game from freshman right-hander Tom Kahl (Bay Shore, NY). In his first CACC Tournament appearance, Kahl allowed only six hits and one run along with seven strikeouts. The third, fourth and fifth hitters in the Charger line-up did the damage at the plate, as Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY), Tom Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) and Mike Munoz (Bronx, NY) combined to go 7-for-13 with three runs and five RBI.

The Chargers got on the board in the third as catcher Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) led off the inning with a single to right and moved to second on the sac bunt by Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY).  A single to left field by Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) put runners on the corners and a sacrifice fly to left field by Brown scored IglesiasRobinson stole second base and a RBI single to center field by Maloney brought in Robinson and gave DC a 2-0 lead.

DC added to the lead in the fifth inning as Maloney got a one out double down the left field line and Munoz followed with an RBI double to center field and later came in to score on an error.  Jonathan Ryan (Troy, NY), who had reached base on an error and advanced to second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM).

The Rams got on the board in the eighth on a RBI single to center field, but Dominican added two more runs in the ninth on RBI singles by Brown and Munoz as the Chargers went on to the 7-1 victory.

With the win Dominican improves to 28-24 overall.
