CHARGERS BASEBALL SWEEP PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY RAMS
Philadelphia, PA (4/19/08) The Dominican College baseball team completed a three game Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) series with the visiting Rams of Philadelphia University Rams with a sweep this evening at Veteran's Memorial Field. The Chargers won the first game, 4-2 and won the night cap, 10-2.
Game One: The Chargers broke a 0-0 tie in the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits. Shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on a single to right field by Willie Mann (Patterson, NY). Freshman Jonathan Ryan (Troy, NY) doubled to right center to score Lopez and a two run single by Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) gave DC a 3-0 lead.
The Rams fought back with two runs in the sixth on a two run triple by Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA) to cut the DC lead to 3-2.
DC answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Lopez hit an RBI single to right to score Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) who had hit a one out triple to right center for the 4-2 victory.
Starter Michael Mondesir (Jamaica, NY) picked up the win (3-2) in sixth innings of work, allowing two runs on five hits and four strikeouts. Anthony Luciano (Holtsville, NY) picked up the save, pitching the seventh and allowing only one hit.
Game Two: DC got on the board in the first on an RBI single by Maloney to score Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY) who had reached base on an infield single.
Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead in the second on a two run double to left center by Devin Conroy (Pine Bush, NY).
Dominican regained the lead scoring two runs each in the second and third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Mann had an RBI single to right center and Brown's sacrifice fly to center scored the second run in the second. In the third, Ryan's RBI single to right scored a run and a bases loaded walk to Robinson scored the second run.
DC added a run in the fourth on an RBI single through the left side by Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) and put four runs on the board in the fifth for a 10-2 lead. In the fifth, Brown was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded to score a run, followed by a two run double down the right field line by Maloney. Brown came in to score on a wild pitch for the final 10-2 lead.
Freshman Tom Kahl (Bay Shore, NY) got the win (3-2) in six innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and eight strikeouts. Jack Crawford (Montgomery, NY) pitched the seventh inning and allowed only one hit with one strikeout.
With the sweep the Chargers improve to 20-19 overall and 12-7 in the CACC, while the Rams fall to 11-18 overall and 10-6 in the CACC.
