Lyndhurst, NJ (4/8/08)  The Dominican College baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header with Felician College this afternoon.  The Golden Falcons won the first game, 2-1, while the Chargers took the night cap, 3-0.

In the opener, Felician right-handers Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ) and Joe Brescia (Holmdel, NJ) combined on a two-hitter, with Brescia recording the final five outs for his first career victory. Junior Mike Libretta (Staten Island, NY) collected a one-out double in the home half of the eighth, and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Following a groundout, a walk, and a pitching change, Schoer singled up the middle for his second game-winning RBI in as many games.

Dominican (12-16, 4-4) had opened the scoring on a homerun by Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) leading off the second inning. Charger starter Brian Craig (Shenendoah, PA) carried a no-hitter into the fifth, but the Golden Falcons chased him with two hits and a walk in that inning, tying the score on a Libretta sacrifice fly. VanEs yielded two hits, struck out four batters and walked four in 6 1/3 innings in a no decision.  Reliever Andrew Distelhurst (Bardonia, NY) suffered the loss in 3 2/3 innings of work, allowing one run on one hit and three stirkeouts.

Dominican freshman right-hander D.J. Stinsman (Egg Harbor Township, NJ) pitched a four-hit shutout in the nightcap with five strikeouts and one walk. He did not allow an extra-base hit, and only once did a Golden Falcon runner reach third base. The Chargers took the lead in the fourth inning on an errant pick-off throw, and received run-scoring hits from Jonathan Ryan (Troy, NY) in the fifth and Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY) in the seventh. Jeff Calabrese (Freehold, NJ) allowed one earned run in a complete-game three-hitter for Felician (10-13, 3-3).

With the split the Chargers improve to 12-16 overall and 4-4 in the CACC, while the Golden Falcons improve to 10-13 and 3-3.

Dominican is back in action on Thursday when they travel to Caldwell College for another CACC double-header.  Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
