BASEBALL DEFEATS POST UNIVERSITY  

Orangeburg,NY (3/27/08) The Dominican College Chargers baseball team defeated the visiting Post University Eagles, 8-7 this afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) baseball game held at Veteran's Memorial Field.

Dominican got on the board in the bottom of the first as Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) led off the game with a walk and moved over to second on a fielder's choice by Jonathan Ryan (Troy, NY).  Both runners advanced on an infield bunt single to third by right fielder Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY).  With the bases loaded  left fielder Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) hit a single to right field to score Robinson and Ryan.  Third basemen Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) later right a sacrifice fly to left field to score Brown and give the Chargers a 3-0 lead. 

The Chargers added two runs in the bottom of the third as Michael Munoz (Bronx, NY) hit an infield single to third to start the inning and scored on the two run blast over the left field fence by first basemen Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) to five DC a 5-0 lead.

The Eagles struck for a run in the top of the fourth as Donnie Dlabola (Levittown, NY) singled to right to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch.  An infield bunt single to second by Jose Reyes (Yonkers, NY) moved Dlabola to third and he came in to score on the RBI single to right by Dab Luisi (Bethpage, NY). 

DC added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Ryan started things off with a single through the left side and moved to second on the sac bunt by BrownMaloney's single through the left side allowed Ryan to score from second base.

Post cut the lead to 6-2 in the top of the sixth as Reyes reached on an error and moved to second on a passed ball.  Luisi's ground out to third allowed Reyes to get to third and he came in for the unearned run on the RBI ground out by Corey Huffine (Colorado Springs, CO)

The Eagles added two runs in the seventh as Jim Conto (W. Hempstead, NY) received a free pass after getting hit  and moved to second on a single through the left side by Dlabola.  A single by Mike Moriarty (Long Beach, NY) loaded the bases and a sac fly to right field allowed Conto to score.  Dlabola scored on the second straight walk by reliever Brian Craig (Shenandoah, PA) to cut the DC lead to 6-4.  Craig worked out of trouble by getting left fielder Eric Rovinetti (Watertown, CT) to strike out swinging and right fielder Curtis Anthony (Torrington, CT) to fly out to right field.

With two outs in the seventh, freshman Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) hit an RBI single to left field to score a run and extend the lead to 7-4.  But in the top of the eighth, Post rallied for a run as Joe Proscia reached on an error and scored on the single by ContoChris Ouelette (Uncasville, CT) came in to run for Conto, stole second and scored on a throwing error by the DC catcher.  Dlabola scored the tying run after getting a walk to get on and scoring on an RBI single by Luisi.

The bottom of the ninth saw Mortellaro single and his pinch runner moved to second on an error, followed by Mann's fielder's choice bunt single to put runners on the corners.  With two outs, a wild pitch by Eagle reliever Johnny Figueroa (Bronx, NY) allowed pinch runner Nelson Cruz (East Elmhurst, NY) to score the game winning run in the 8-7 Charger victory.

Charger Starter Tommy Mejia (Brooklyn, NY) went six innings, allowing two runs (one unearned) on seven hits and four strikeouts in the no decision.  Jack Crawford (Montgomery, NY) picked up his second win of the win in two innings of work with two hits and two strikeouts.

With the win Dominican improves to 7-12 overall and 1-2 in the CACC, while Post falls to 7-12 overall and 1-1 in the CACC.  

The Chargers are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Concordia College in a non-conference game at Veteran's Memorial Field.  Game time is set for 3:30 pm
