CHARGERS BASEBALL LOSES TO DIVISION I UNIVERSITY OF PENNSLYVANIA

Boca Raton, FL (3/15/08)  The Dominican College baseball team lost to Division I University of Pennslyvania, 7-1 this morning at the Santaluces Complex in Boca Raton, Fl.

The Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as the inning began with back to back walks to catcher Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) and Nelson Cruz (East Elmhurst, NY).  A balk led to both runners advancing and with runners on second and third Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) hit an RBI fly out to center field for the 1-0 lead.

The Quakers tied the game in the bottom stanza as Tom Grandieri (Media, PA) reached on a DC error, advanced to third on a single by Adrian Lorenzo (Miami, FL) and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to tie the game at 1-1.

The Quakers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Dan Williams (Southampton, NJ) got a one out single to left center and came in to score on an RBI double by Steve Gable (Emmaus, PA)Kyle Armeny (Florham Park, NJ) then singled to right field to score Gable and give UPENN a 3-1 advantage.

UPENN added four runs in the bottom of the seventh on six hits.  After back to back singles to start the inning, Armeny hit a three run homer to right field.  Grandieri followed later with an RBI single to left to score Will Davis (Atlanta, GA) who had reached on a fielder's choice.

Dominican starter Michael Mondesir (Jamaica,  NY) suffered the loss (0-1) in six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and four strikeouts.  

Grandieri picked up the win to improve to 1-0 on the year after going 5 1/3 innings and allowing one run on one hit and three strikeouts.

The Chargers are back in action tomorrow when they face Franklin Pierce University in a double header beginning at 12pm at the Santaluces Sports Complex.
