GilardoLifts Chargers Over Felician College, 13-12

Peter Gilardo got the game winning hit in the
bottom of the 12th inning as Dominican College defeated
visiting Felician College, 13-12, in Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference (CACC) baseball action this afternoon at Veteran’s
Memorial Park. With the win, the Chargers
improve to 16-15 overall and 7-5 in the CACC, while Felician falls
to 18-23 overall and 5-6 overall.
The Chargers got on the board in the bottom of the first when freshman Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) hit a two out single to left field and moved to second on the walk to Jose Escalera (Bronx, NY). Designated hitter Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) hit an RBI single to right to score Maloney as Escalera raced around to third, attempting to score. The throw by the third basemen hit Escalera in the back and allowed him to score as DC took a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Falcons came back in the top of the third as Albie Sanguiliano (Flemington, NJ) got a one out walk, followed by back to back singles by Vinnie DiBenedetti (Forked River, NJ) and Kenny Vanderhee (Aventura, FL) to load the bases. Senior Frank Quintana (Miami, FL) took the first pitch over the left field fence for the grand slam and the 4-2 lead.
DC regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Jose Made (Binghamton, NY) led off the inning with a single, stole second and came in to score on the RBI single by Yordis Veras (East Elmhurst, NY). After a walk to Maloney and a infield single by Escalera, Mortellaro had an RBI single to left field and Peter Gilardo (Cornwall, NY) drew a bases loaded to walk to give DC the 5-4 lead. Escalera scored on a ground by freshman Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) and Mortellaro scored on the RBI single to left by Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY) for the 7-4 Dominican lead.
Dominican added a run in the fourth on a RBI double to left by Escalera for the 8-4 lead.
Felician got two runs back in the top of the fifth when Vanderhee and Quintana hit back to back infield singles, followed by an RBI single by Ray Rose (Piscataway, NJ) and a sacrifice fly ball to right field by Chris Flynn (Keyport, NY) to score Quintana and bring the Falcons back into the game, trailing 8-6.
The Chargers added four runs in the bottom of the seventh on three hits, including an RBI double by Made, and two Falcons errors for a commanding 12-6 lead
FC rallied in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 12-12 as Fkynn got hit a one out single to right, followed by back to back singles by Dave Schoer (Manalapan, NJ) and Jordan Noval (Manalapan, NJ) to score Flynn. Schoer came in to score on the RBI walk to pinch hitter Thomas DiPietro (Staten Island, NY). Vanderhee and Quintana had back to back RBI singles with two outs.
In the bottom of the 12th inning, Veras singled to right to lead off the inning, followed by a bunt single by Maloney and a walk to Escalera to load the bases. With one out, Gilardo came up and lined a shot into left field, scoring Veras and lifting the Chargers to the 13-12 victory.
Brendan Bohan (Rutherford, NJ) got the win (2-0), in 4 1/3 innings of relief, not allowing a hit and striking out four.
Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ) took the loss (0-7), in 4 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits and three strikeouts.
The
Chargers are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on
Caldwell College in CACC baseball action. Game time is
slated for 2pm.
